Thursday afternoon I was in the study room, reading The First Stone, when I heard Zane come home. I heard him dropped his heavy duffel bag to the floor as the bat collided with the tiled floor. He muttered under his breath. He had just gotten back from practice so he must have been tired. I heard his footstep carry through the house and up the stairs.
I dropped the book on the couch. Quietly, I headed to the kitchen and started looking in the fridge for anything to eat. I took out a the apple pie that Teressa had made earlier. Grabbing my dark wavy hair, I pulled it into a messy bun. I bit my lips, my mouth watering just looking at the pie before me.
I haven't seen much of Zane lately. It has been two weeks since he moved in, and by now I've already memorized his routine. He would wake up seven in the morning to go for his usual morning run. Now I would know that because I saw him when I was roller skating around the neighborhood. After his morning run, he would take a quick shower, have a quick breakfast before heading to the field for his baseball practice.
He would come home late in the afternoon, take a quick shower again and do God knows what in his room.
I took a bit of the pie, listening to Zane's footstep upstairs. I was going to meet Sara later on. I wondered if I should ask Zane to come with us. Yeah, it would probably be a good idea if I did invite him. After all he's been focusing on baseball too much this past couple of days.
I ran up the stairs and knocked on his door. I had my arms up, ready to knock again when his door suddenly flew opened and he stood before me.
"Hey," I said feeling nervous for the first time around him.
He was in one of his board short without no shirt. I tried to keep my eyes away from his perfect sculpted abs and tried looking him straight in the eye. I really didn't know why I was so nervous. Maybe it was because he was looking at me with so much intensity that it could probably burn the house down.
"Do you maybe want to come to the movies with Sara and I? I think Dean's coming too," I said. Great it sounded like I was asking him out on a date. "You know, because I'd hate to be the third wheel."
"Actually, I'm meeting someone up later on," he said almost ready to shut the door.
"You mean one of the guys?" I asked hopeful that he was meeting his teammates instead of some girl.
"No," he said.
My mouth formed an O shape. "Well, have fun," I said as I made my way across the hallway and into my room.
Curiosity bubbled inside me. Who was he meeting? And why did he sound so.. different? I mean if he was going on a date, he could go on a date. It wasn't like he had to keep it a secret or anything. I sighed. Why am I even bothering about this? It was stupid. Zane was my "summer brother" and nothing else.
I heard my phone vibrating from my bedside table. I ignored it, knowing that it was probably Sara telling me to get ready already. I opened the door to my bathroom and quickly got ready.
I carefully slid the glass door open so I could step in. The cold water hit my skin. I winced then started giggling for some reason. I loved taking cold showers, something about it wakes me up. Not that I need any waking up since it was already late in the afternoon.
I wrapped myself up in my pink robe and opened my closet. I picked up one of my dark skinny ripped jeans and paired it up with a white flowy top. I slipped on my flats and blow dried my hair dry. Grabbing my phone and purse, I quickly ran downstairs reading Sara's text.
