The game takes place in Yharnam, a dark metropolis characterized by its gothic and victorian architecture. In Yharnam there is a mysterious plague, leading to those infected turning into beasts and other creatures, where the citizens of Yarnam decide to take it into their own hands by killing any of the people who become infected. You play as a hunter, who has gone to Yharnam in order to find the cure for the plague. Now Central Yharnam,is oddly enough nowhere near the center of the world map, but there is a high population of people, and until you arrive they seem to be doing fine. Now once you get through the town you learn how the game weeds out the players who can't handle the game's difficulty, and that is that you literally cannot level up until you get insight, and to get insight you either have to encounter a boss, or get madman's knowledge. Areas in the game are pretty much the same general formula, fight enemies, reach boss and continue. There are 17 total bosses in game and only 7 of them are required to fight. 10 bosses are just there for you to fight if you feel like or get bored. But I discuss boss in my bosses part of my review. But back to Yharnam, the beast plague of Yharnam has led to nightly hunts, and the townspeople find themselves strangely drawn on these hunts, as they themselves become increasingly less human. Unfortunately, now that you've had a blood transfusion, you're not quite human either, and while you might not think you fit the bill, the townspeople clearly see you as a "foul beast." When killed by Townspeople ,you awaken in a hazy fog, a world called the Hunter's Dream, inhabited by a mysterious old man named Gehrman, and by a lifelike doll, who lies motionless and dead. This place, this workshop, is to be used by hunters, and Gehrman tells you to help yourself to whatever you need there, and not to worry about the specifics of the journey yet. You gain this insight into Yharnam, though, strange things happening. The doll in the Hunter's Dream springs to life, and offers her assistance in infusing you with the power of blood. After slaying a hunter who gave in to the beast plague himself, and in his madness slaughtered his own wife, you find the key to the Tomb of Oedon, which leads further on to Oedon Chapel. It is here where you find the first scrap of information hinting at greater things going on in the city of Yharnam.
