Just In Time

I wake up in the middle of the night with searing pain in my lower belly. Tears fill my eyes as I shake Tobias awake, hurriedly.

"Tris, what's wrong?" He asks, worried.

"Baby."

That's all I have to say before he climbs out of bed, picks me up, and rushes me to the infirmary as I cry.

"We're losing the baby, aren't we?" I cry into his shoulder. I'm only saying it because it feels just like the miscarriage, if not, worse.

"No. We'll be okay. Everything will be okay."

We arrive at the infirmary and my mum comes rushing over.

"What's going on?"

"Her belly hurts."

Mum rushes us into a room and Tobias lays me on the bed, gently. Rose pulls my top up so that it ends just under my boobs and she squirts the ultrasound gel on it. Mum puts the wand thing on it and moves it around.

I don't look.

I'm too scared to look.

I just look at Tobias, and his worried face, as he holds my hand and looks me in the eyes, trying to tell me that everything will be okay, even when it's not.

I hear my mum gasp and I know something's wrong.

"What's going on?" I ask.

She doesn't answer. Instead she walks over to the set of draws in the corner and goes through them, trying to find something.

She pulls out a needle and rushes over, injecting my belly with whatever is in it. It takes about a minute but the pain ends and I take deep breaths, trying to calm myself down. Rose smiles slightly and removes the wand from my belly, drying the gel off it and pulling my top back down.

"What happened?" Tobias questions as a tear lines his cheek.

"Someone drugged her with a serum similar to the one David gave her. She almost had a miscarriage but you got her here just in time. What we injected her with was the reversal of the serum, you couldn't be given that in the Arena because you're only allowed things that are available, that obviously wasn't. But don't worry. The baby is fine now."

I almost had another miscarriage. But I didn't.

"Who would've drugged me? They said they would allow me to remain pregnant."

"Evelyn..." Tobias' voice trails off. He looks angry. Beyond angry. "She did this. She didn't want you to remain pregnant, she only agreed to it because she wants us to lead the rebellion. She thinks the baby will hold us back and won't allow us to do what she wants, so she tried to kill them."

Bud and Tori burst through the door, worried.

"What's going on?" Tori asks.

"Someone tried to kill the baby the way David did last time." I tell them.

"We think Evelyn did it." Tobias says.

"I'll go have a word with her." Bud leaves the room, looking angry as well.

Why does all the bad stuff have to happen to us?

Why can't people just leave us alone?

Why can't people let us be happy?

My hand rests on my belly, protecting my baby from the harshness of the world. Tobias' hand moves to lay on top of mine, our fingers intertwining. He kisses my forehead sweetly. I move over so he can get in bed with me, and his arms surround me, protecting me and our child from everything.

And somehow I manage to fall back to sleep.

Only to be woken up an hour later to the door slamming open.

"That bitch!" Bud shouts.

Tobias and I are the only ones in the room at this point and we look at him, shocked.

"I take it she's the one that tried to kill our baby?" I ask, not wanting to know the answer but needing to know.

"Yeah, she did it. I asked her why and she said that the baby will hold you back and mean you won't want to do as much, which isn't good when you're leading a rebellion. She also said that she wanted Tobias back and he won't go back to her because of you and the baby, so she has to get rid of you so she can be with her son. So basically, she's hoping that you and the baby die at some point, and for Tobias to go back to being mummy's boy. Then I asked if there's any way that you two can't be the Mockingjays and she said no. If we still want to get Finnick, Johanna and Annie back from the Capital we have to go along with her plans, no matter how dangerous they are. So, we're screwed. There's no way out of being the faces of the rebellion, and there's no way you're going to be kept safe at all times."

Tears fill my eyes again.

"Well, I'm never going to go to her again. How dare she do something like that and expect me to come running to her. First, she leaves me with an asshole father who beat me constantly. Then she tries to kill my baby and she expects me to come running. Well it's not going to happen. I hate her."

"No matter how much you hate her you still have to be the Mockingjays, whether you like it or not."

"Is she going to send us into the field?" I ask.

"Probably. But I'm sure the team will do everything to make sure you're safe, and protected."

"I'm not going into the field."

"You have to if that is what she wants you to do. Or are we just not going to rescue Finnick, and Johanna, and Annie?"

"She's just as bad as David."

"I know. But what would you rather, win a rebellion and get rid of the Games, or not win, let the Games continue, and have your child, and however many other children you may have, thrown into the Arena as soon as they are of age? Because that will happen if the Games go on. They love throwing the children of victors into the Arena, they rig the draws. But the children of two victors, now that is what they really want. And they'll rig the Arena as well, so that your children don't win no matter how good they are. So, I suggest you go along with what she says. The team and I will make sure you're as safe and protected as possible. And we will end the Games. Then, you never have to see her again, okay?"

I just nod. So does Tobias. I can tell he really doesn't like the thought of having to see his mother again. But it's for a good cause.

I just hope it works out.
