Hermione rushed to the common room as soon as the painting told her that she was needed there. What could possibly be wrong? As she entered the common room, she heard Professor McGonagall and Draco talking.

" I have to go, Professor," Draco cried. "He's the only one that survived to be born. Please, let me go to him."

"I will take you, along with Miss. Granger for support."

"Thank you. I will forever be in your debt, and so will little David if he survives this."

"What's going on?" Hermione asked.

Draco handed Emily over to McGonagall, and ran over to Hermione to wrap her in a hug. He explained what Professor McGonagall had told him between sobs.

"Sh," Hermione shushed him gently. "When do we leave, Professor?"

"Now."

Hermione took the McGonagall's outstreatched hand, and they apparated to an alley. McGonagall took out her wand and used it to change their clothes into something more suitable to the muggle world. She then handed Emily to Hermione, and led them to the hospital. They asked for the room of David Malfoy, and were led to a room in the infant intensive care ward. There was a doctor standing next to the little guy's bed.

"H-How is he," Draco asked, and Hermione could tell he was near tears.

The doctor turned to the group, "I'm sorry, but I can only release medical information to the family."

"I'm his biological father, god damn it!" Draco whisper yelled. "He wouldn't be in this mess if his mother hadn't defied me. Now, how is my son?"

"You are Draco Malfoy?" the doctor asked.

"Yes, now tell me how my son is."

"Well, he's in critical condition. Right now, he's on life support, and if he doesn't start breathing on his own soon, he won't make it."

"No, no, no, no, no," Draco cried. "I should have taken him away from her. I shouldn't have worried about what father would think."

"I'll leave you for now," the doctor walked out.

Draco walked over to the frail figure on the bed, "He'll be a year old tomorrow. He was born premature, only three pounds, a skinny little thing. I'll never forget finding out after the birth that he had been born. My poor baby."

"He'll be fine," Hermione said coming over holding her wand. "I can't heal him completely, but enough to get him out of here."

"Not too sudden, Miss. Granger," McGonagall said.

"I won't," Hermione said before muttering a spell. A few minutes later, she muttered a couple more spells, then pocketed her wand. "He'll still be here for a while, and you'll have to talk with the foster mom to get him."

"Thanks, Mione. We're missing class."

"Your son is more important than school."

Draco nodded, and placed a hand on David's brow. Hermione turned and saw a woman enter the room who did not look like a doctor or even a nurse.

"Who are you?" the woman asked.

"I'm Hermione Granger, and this is my boyfriend Draco Malfoy," Hermione replied. "And they are our teacher Minerva McGonagall and the little girl we're babysitting, Emily. And you are?"

"He's Draco Malfoy?" the woman asked. "As in David's father?"

"Yes, I am," Draco replied.

"I'm Ellie Mae McCoy. I'm David's adoptive mother. I'm very sorry for what happened to him."

Draco clenched his jaws, "It's not your fault. If that woman hadn't given him away, this never would have happened. I want my baby back."

"Please, Mr. Malfoy. I can't have children. Please don't take him away from me," Ellie was sobbing.

Draco looked to Hermione, and she walked over and whispered, "Remember, you've got this one to look foreword to. She has nothing to look foreword to."

Slowly, Draco nodded, "I don't want to lose him, but as long as I get to visit him, I won't make you give him up."

"Oh thank you, Mr. Malfoy. Thank you," Ellie Mae smiled.

"Please, call me Draco," Draco held out his hand for Ellie to shake.

Ellie took his hand, "And you can call me Ellie. You know, I'm moving to Brittain soon, so it nay be difficult for visitation."

Draco and Hermione chuckled a little, "We're from Brittain. That'll make it easier. We were coming in search of David when someone mentioned this, right Hermione?"

"Yeah, it's true."

"Well then, that's great," Ellie replied
