Her POV

"No. My home room teacher is already a bitch and it's been four days." Bella laughed at her sister's phrasing, though it was true.

"Oh c'mon Brookie-Lynn, she can't be that bad." The older sister cringed at the nickname, immediately telling her off. "I told you to call me either Brooklyn or Brooke. Not Brookie or whatever else you think of." She rolled her eyes, the younger one shrugging.

"Not gonna stop me," She mumbled, and opened the front door, holding it out for a brief moment before heading inside.

This area of Canada was definitely a lot colder than she expected. Maybe it was because they were by Lake Ontario, but the fact it was winter wasn't helping.

The night came a lot quicker, peeking at dark around four, and finally fulfilling the time at five.
So, after finishing homework, she finally shut her white blinds as the faint moonlight was not helping her see.

She had eaten dinner already but it wasn't the same as before. Their family barely spoke now, a few sidebar conversations or comments here and there.

The girls were not asked the annoying question of, "how was your day?" anymore. She assumed it was because her dad could simply not find it in him to take that role.

She sighed, rubbing her head slightly after throwing her books and papers back into her bag. The dust in the air made her airways feel compacted, like they were coated with the useless substance.

She needs to explore, and though it was dark, she needed to take a walk to breathe. She pulled on her Vans and grey North Face jacket, hoping it would be enough to keep her warm.

"Dad, I'm gonna take a walk," She called, glancing in and out of different rooms. She found him in his bedroom, staring at a photo of his wife. "Oh, um," She stuttered in the doorway, making him look up. "I'm gonna take a walk, yeah?"

He scanned her for a moment, "Be careful, it's dark." He checked his wrist watch quickly, "I expect you home in forty-five minutes. If you're not, I'm gonna run around in circles after calling the police because you were eaten by werewolves."

She chuckled at his joke, knowing he was trying to lighten the mood when she caught him. "What if I told them that they could eat me?"

"Then I can finally dedicate a room to your younger sister, filled with photos of her and how great she is." Her jaw fell and she put on a dramatic look, scoffing. "Rude." She huffed playfully, walking over to hug him.

"See you in a bit!" She shouted throughout the house as she opened the wooden door, shutting it quickly to minimize the cold air let into the house.

The crisp air chilled her breath in front of her as she headed towards the path beside her house, leading into the forest. Old leaves and twigs crunched beneath her feet as she observed her surroundings, staring at the trees and moss growing.

She looked up for a brief moment to steady her steps, doing a double take when realizing what laid ahead. There was a big wooden cabin, almost like the typical ones you see in movies.

Should I check it out? Probably not. I can just go right and loop back around.

She shrugged, heading off to the right and rerouting her path to angle it back to her house.
