(06) King of Hearts
I have no energy left to even refuse, so I let him drag me into the dim Mall again. Our sneakers pad against the tiles, fills my ears in little trickles of fear, and I can't deny the tiny ball of security flaring faintly in my chest, like my veins there have warmed, with Liam's hand clasped tightly onto mine as he leads the way. We descend into the ground floor, where the said Carnival is situated. I still don't believe Liam, though. I mean, a Carnival inside a mall? That's just insane. It's impossible to —
Oh.
A large arch, like an entrance of some sort, stands before us, and I could barely see the darkened outlines of rides and game stands littered inside of it. My eyes widen. Wow.
Liam lets go of my hand and wanders to the side. I don't mind him. instead I take time reading the sign perched on the very top of the arch, curling along it’s curved edge: Popcorn Land Amusement Park; and then at the very bottom of it, written in a much smaller font on the arch itself: Where real fun begins.
Liam pulls a lever on the side, and the lights begin to illuminate the entire floor, one by one, with very loud snaps. I could now see a miniature roller coaster (I don't know. It just looks like one), and beside it stands a mini Ferris wheel with brightly colored carriages. There are dozens of game stands practically spluttered everywhere, and even mini-food stops!
"Amazing," I mutter, my jaw slightly ajar as i scan everything my eyes could see. Liam stands beside me, and in the corner of my eyes I could see his hands are placed in his pockets, eyes also raking our surrounding.
"Come on, then." He doesn't let me answer, agree to him like he should’ve, the jerk. He takes my hand and leads me inside the amusement park. I look at him from the side, and I could see a huge grin on his face like, a light in his eyes. Like this is so wonderful. And he’s so innocent. And I should stop thinking. There is still a bit of cockiness radiating off him, but I could sense that he’s genuinely happy. I can't stop the small smile on my face.
We stop by an arena with small, cartoon-like cars in side. "Do you like Bumper Cars?" Liam asks.
"Not as much as I like beating you at it," I challenge him, smirking, and he chuckles before going to the control panel at the corner. He pushes a random button. The lights that are perched on the back of the cars light up.
Liam jogs back to me and again grabs my hand. "I'm not a kid, you know? I can walk perfectly fine without a helping hand," I tell him.
"Says the boy who slipped on stage," Liam snickers. Doesn’t let go.
"Hey! That was like three years ago!" He’s talking about the tiny incident I had when we were in Eight Grade. The floor was absolutely slippery, could you really blame me? I slipped. Fell right on my butt. I had been a major laughing-stock for the whole school year, thanks to Mr. Git here who had found it absolutely fit to "commercialize" my little slip, so to speak.
We stop by the cars, and he finally lets go of my hand.
"Stupidity never changes over the years," he tells me ever so slowly, like he’s lecturing a small child. How could he be so fun one moment, and then so annoying the next?
"You're the epitome of stupidity," I say. He chuckles.
"Who got trapped in the mall?" He raises his brow and curves his lips a little at the corners.
"It wasn't even my fault! It was your stupid mall and its stupid ceiling. You should blame it, not me," I huff, staring at the other direction with a frown.
He holds my chin up with his fingers and directs my face over to his. Our faces are so close I could feel his hot breath on my lips. "Awe, of course, babe," he cooes, letting go of my chin. I glare at him, though my cheeks flame a little from how our face had gotten so close.
