Prologue
Two years ago today.
"Just a drill," they told us as the lights flashed and the klaxon sounded, "...to get you accustomed to what you will see out in the real world."
And so, with our hearts in the right places but our trust in the wrong, we loaded our white ray guns with blanks and scattered across the vast warehouse's tiny hallways.
"Hold up!" The pounding of boots on tile coming from behind me heralded Lizzy's arrival.
"What sector do you have?" she asked, panting, as she pulled her dirty blond hair up into a tight ponytail.
"Child," I rolled my eyes and pouted. I always got stuck with Child.
"Same, as usual," she gave a half-hearted grin, just about as sick of being assigned to the Child Sector as I was.
We made our way down the long, dimly lit hallway until we came to a junction, where another hallway cut across our own.
Yelling and more pounding of feet echoed off to the right, getting closer with each passing second. Lizzy and I halted and waited for them to pass by; after all, there was no need for hurry as this was just a drill. Besides, we were in no mood to be trampled.
Soon, five or six boys emerged from the hallway to the right. I caught a flash of red hair within the pack and blushed slightly.
Lizzy noticed the red hair as well and cast a sly glance in my direction. I frowned at her.
"Not gonna happen," I rolled my eyes as we leisurely crossed the hallway. She shrugged.
"Hey, five years isn't THAT much!" she said teasingly. I shot her a glare.
"I DON'T like him!" I exclaimed as we picked up the pace. Some of the lights had burned out in this section of the hallway and I hated the dark.
The others sounds had faded, leaving just Lizzy and I to bask in the silence before we typed in a code, which would open up the door leading to the Child Sector.
"Crap, they changed it again," Lizzy mumbled as she fumbled with the keys.
"Here let me try, idiot!" I slapped her hand away playfully and typed in the correct code.
"How the heck did you know it?" Lizzy pouted.
I waved my hands around mystically, "Magic!" We started to crack up.
I pushed open the giant metal door, grunting slightly and removing my ray gun from its strap around my waist. Lizzy followed suit. They always had at least one "drac" hiding behind the door to catch us off guard. Surprisingly, this time there wasn't one. Lizzy and I glanced at each other and shrugged.
We took up our positions behind a metal bar and waited. Our job was simple: we had to "ghost" any "drac" that attempted to attack the pregnant women and young children living in the Child Sector. There was only one way in, and it was through the metal door that we were (somewhat) diligently guarding. That's why they always put the youngest recruits on Child.
"So..." Lizzy whispered in a sing-song voice that bounced off the metal hallway filled with doors behind us. The Child Sector knew about the drill beforehand, so they were already on lock-down. Barely anything could penetrate the heavy steel doors its occupants were hiding behind.
I looked at her annoyed, knowing what was coming, "What?"
"You SO like Party!" she exclaimed while I rolled my eyes. We had this conversation every single time a drill was called as we sat in the Child Sector, bored out of our minds. It was already so well protected without our help; most of the time the "dracs" forgot to attack it.
"Do not!" I whined, absent-mindedly clicking the safety off of my polished white ray gun and shooting a blank at the opposite wall. It hit the speck of red I was aiming for dead on.
"Do too!" Lizzy pushed, shooting for the same speck of red an hitting it without even looking.
"Show off," I mumbled under my breath before continuing the conversation, "Besides, even if - and that's a big 'if' - I did like Party, he's way too old and accomplished for me too even have a chance."
Lizzy stayed silent for a beat; she couldn't argue with that. Suddenly, she perked up.
"But you do like him!"
I sighed in defeat, "Maybe, yes, fine! But only a little!"
"Says the person who has had an ongoing crush on him for the past two and a half years!" she exclaimed, not yet done. A blush was creeping up my face that matched Party's vibrant hair.
"Have not," I mumbled half-heartedly, knowing that the battle had already been won.
"Hey, where there's a will there's a way!" she whisper-shouted optimistically. I shot her a skeptical look.
Lizzy studied my face for a moment, frowning, before a devious smile formed on her lips.
"Wanna bet on it?" she asked, smirking.
"Heck yeah," I nodded, knowing there was no way on Earth I was gonna lose this one, even with my notorious bad luck.
"Fine," Lizzy nodded, her high ponytail bouncing up and down, "I will bet you twenty BLI coins that you will not kiss Party Poison by the time you turn sixteen."
I reached out my hand and we shook, "Oh, you're o- Hey wait a minute! That was foul play!" I whispered as loudly as I could, "Now I have to kiss Party within the next three years. Dang it, Lizzy!"
Lizzy smiled innocently, "Or you could just pay up."
"You know that I'm broke!" I groaned and flumped against the wall. Maybe I could fake it... I could TELL Lizzy that I had kissed Party, and no one would be the wiser. Yeah!
"I hate you, Lizard," I grouched, attempting to hide my plan from her eyes. I swear that kid could read me like a book.
"Hate you too, Kit-Cat!" she exclaimed, punching me lightly on the shoulder.
"Oh, and don't try and tricks or short-cuts," her expression turned fake-serious as she took two fingers, pointing first to her eyes, then to mine, "'cause I promise I'm gonna be watching you, every step of the way!"
I giggled as the metal door banged open. It seemed as though the "dracs" remembered us this time after all.
***
Two years ago today, Lizzy made that promise to me.
Two years ago today, Draculoids banged open that seemingly unbreachable metal door.
Two years ago today, I watched what I thought to be the truth disappear with the ashes of the burnt out husk of a building I used to call home.
And two years ago today, I started anew.

AN:
Well.
I told myself I'd never do it, but here it is anyway.
A start to a full length fanfiction.
To be honest, I'm not sure why I'm committing to this; I guess the idea just wouldn't leave my brain!
Anyway, it is a DD AU, but I (obviously) added a few new elements, that will hopefully make it a bit... different.
Hope you all enjoy my crappy writing!
x
Ps. Lizzy, I just used your name 'cause I was running out of ideas, no need to get fat-headed about it.
But I am expecting my name to appear somewhere in a story, just saying.
Lol kidding. Or am I?
