"I promised I had the money, but it all got spent."
~ Pretty little liar, Macy Maloy ~
Thankfully, because her Mum was home now and seemed to be steering along the right path, Skylar was able to go to school on Monday. She made sure that the twins were at school first and then she ran all the way, hoping to get there before the bell.
Of course that was wishful thinking. She sat down next Alex in English and panted to get her breath back. Tanya looked at her with her lips pulled down in a frown. She couldn't work out whether it was because she was sat next to Alex, or if it was her attire and red face.
Around her, everybody had out their Shakespeare timelines which must have been done for homework. She sunk lower in her seat and tried to avoid eye contact at all costs. "So I'd like to see everybody's homework on my front desk before you leave. Skylar, could I please talk to you?" Mrs Masden asked sweetly at the end. Sky nodded.
"I'll wait for you outside?" Alex said and then left with Tanya. Sky rolled her eyes and went to speak to the teacher.
Mrs Masden glanced through the pile of homework and then at Skylar. "Are you feeling better now Sky?" she asked. In order to stay off for the whole of the week, Sky had called the school office pretending to be Liz and reported that she had food poisoning.
"Yes, much better thanks," she lied unconvincingly.
The teacher nodded. "I'm afraid that you've missed quite a lot and I'm sure other teachers will tell you the same." Skylar swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded. "I need you to make one of these timelines for Romeo and Juliet. Take Alex's, I'm sure he won't mind. I would like to see yours on my desk before you go to practise tonight."
"Okay," Sky said and folded Alex's piece. She put it in her bag and then left the room. Mrs Masden watched her go feeling sorry for the girl. Teachers weren't stupid; they could tell exactly what was wrong and Sky had been the same right the way throughout high school. Struggling to learn, hiding from the other girls, thin as a rake.
Skylar and Alex walked towards the science blocks. "Coach said that practise is cancelled tonight because the fields too wet although, he wants to see you at some point today."
"Great," Sky rolled her eyes. "I'm looking forward to it." For a moment, no one said anything. Nothing between them had ever been uncomfortable, they'd never fought about anything serious. Considering this, Sky sighed. "Well can I come to yours then?" she asked. They had a pact that whenever practise was cancelled, Sky would go over to Alex's house and he would help her catch up on work. It had been that way for years.
When he said nothing Sky looked at him. He tilted his head and looked defeated. "Sorry Sky, I already made plans with Scott tonight."
She narrowed her eyes. "Doing what?" she scoffed.
Alex shrugged. "You know guy stuff."
"I've always been up for your 'guy stuff.'" It was true, she learnt how to play Xbox, she listened to them talk about actresses and models that she'd never heard of before, and she gave them advice on talking to girls- not that they listened.
"I'm sorry Sky."
Skylar shook her head disgustedly and said, "don't worry. Enjoy your date with Scott."
"Sky it's not like that."
She reached her classroom and then opened the door. "Whatever Al. I really don't care anymore."
Tyler was already sat down and was leaning forward to talk to Peyton. "Hey," they said in synchronisation as she sat down. Skylar smiled but was too mad to reply.
