At first I was entirely shocked.
Second, I was entirely amazed.
Third, I was entirely kissing him back.
At that moment, I thought about nothing except his mouth, his soft lips, and his hand on my arm sliding down and resting on my waist. The cold didn't bother me anymore- he was all I needed. My hands were pressed up firmly against his muscled chest, and I sighed in content.
So there I stood, locked in a heated embrace in the middle of a god-forsaken forest, making out with someone I didn't know and couldn't see. Later on, I would not regret this one bit.
I was the first to take a breath, my lips hot and face glowing. He didn't even take a step back, he just stared into my eyes with something I couldn't recognize. It wasn't just nice, but more towards soft and trustworthy and... perfect. His face was covered by the shadows, but I could picture the satisfied grin that would have stretched itself across it when he gave a small laugh. I blushed beet red while silence took over.
He was the first to speak.
"You feel better now?"
"Yes, I definetley am." I said breathlessly.
"Well then, we wouldn't want you to catch cold or something out here," the stranger said, "'Cause it gets pretty chilly out here."
"Yeah, I could tell."
He gave another small laugh which was young and full of life, but stopped and stared at me. Oh my god. Did I have something on my face or... A bug... Oh lord. Not now...
"You look amazing," he whispered.
I felt my insides going all tingly.
"Really?"
"Yes." He said, before leaning in again but this time, I knew what was coming.
Our lips met in a hot explosion that I would have sworn caused fireworks. His breath came in giant heaves while he focused on me, while his arms started pushing me farther up against the tree I had been leaning on before. I ran a hand through his thick curly hair, and he groaned with pleasure. He smelled heavenly, a mix of Axe, mint, and flowers. It went by too fast.
He broke away slowly, still looking into my eyes for a sign. I wanted to capture that moment forever, his shadowed orbs still glowed bright green in the darkness. His hands left my waist, and he took a gentle step back. His next words came as a total surprise:
"I have to leave now."
"What?!" I started, "I'm lost in the freaking woods! I've been out here for hours in the dark... what do you expect me to do, sleep with a bear? Can't you take me back to camp?"
"No." Was his reply.
"Why not?"
He lowered his head.
"I can't tell you that."
I started to get scared.
"But, I'm gonna die out here," I cried, "I don't even know which way I came from."
His look was pained, like he was trying to make a descision in his head, trying to figure out which was the most logical. After a minute, it won out.
"Follow me."
I eagerly got as close to him as possible, and he led the way out of the clearing.
I don't know how he did it, but with no path and no light he managed to get me to the dusty road that we had traveled on in the limo in less than an hour. I knew that we were close now, so this would be an easy walking distance. I was overjoyed.
"Thanks... Um...." I turned around to face him.
His dark hoodie was pulled up now, sheilding his face from any moonlight, but I could have sworn he smirked.
"Yes?" He purred.
"I don't know your name," I said, "You never told me."
His face was serious now.
"That's because I can't tell you."
What? Now I was confused.
"Why can't you?"
"I... I... Just can't." He stuttered. He was having another argument in his head- I could see it in his eyes.
"Oh." I said quietly.
"No Layla, its not like that," his voice was strained, "I would tell you if I could... But I just... Can't. I'm in a position where I'm not allowed to... Say certain things. But I would if I could."
"So... I will never get to know your name?" I squeaked.
"Arrgghhhh!" He stormed quietly. His head looked like it was going to explode, like he was trying to listen to all the voices at the same time. His hands held his head and he paced back and forth. "Layla, please. Trust me on this."
I bowed my head in shame.
"Okay."
"Hey."
He walked up to me and put his tan hand under my chin, bringing my tear stained face to his.
"Don't cry," he whispered. "Please don't, it hurts me to see you like this."
"I'm not..." I whimpered.
"Yes, you are."
I looked up to meet his eyes, and he leaned down to kiss my forehead.
There was something about him that made me want to believe him, like it wasn't something just to pacify me- it was a statement of fact.
He let go of my hand now, leaving it to rest at his side and I turned away to face the road. I could see the lights from the party now, so it couldn't be that far off. I faced back to him, but all I saw was darkness and the woods.
"Hello?" I called out in dispair. "Hey, where are you?"
His voice replied from nowhere:
"Don't worry. I will see you soon." Pause.
"And you can call me Zach."
And that was the last I heard and saw of Zach that night, while he dissapeared into the woods again and the sun started to peek over the horizon, leaving me to walk down the road alone.
It was official.
The mystery boy was gone.
