Chapter 8
"Lily!! Wake up! We have to get down to breakfast!" Hermione's urgent voice broke through my chocolate wizard of oz dream.
"I was just about to enter the castle of caramel Hermione! Why'd you wake me?"
"SCHOOL, and if you're lucky, we can fit in some more spell practice after breakfast. Only if you hurry!" I sighed and heaved myself out of bed, though secretly ecstatic about my first day of Hogwarts.
My new robe felt so crisp and smooth the first time round and I noticed had over night it had grown a Gryffindor symbol, just like my scarve and hat had turned from black to red and gold. I quickly slipped on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, then closed my robe over the top. I hurried along to our bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth, all the time Hermione was impatiently tapping her foot, raising an eyebrow in my direction.
"Okay, I'm ready." Hermione relaxed, dropped the fake angriness and smiled. I grabbed my (new) bag, full of my (new) books and (new) parchments and quills and followed Hermione downstairs. In the common room we found Harry and Ron chatting, waiting for us. "You took your time." said Ron, I mock scowled at him. Then together, bags swinging, we hurried down to the Great Hall.
It didn't take Ron long at all to get lost in the piles of food, though I was close to doing the same; the food really was amazing. I could just hear Harry complaining about what a terrible Monday we have over the sound of Ron collecting more food, which reminded me about his future detentions with the Umbridge Monster.
"Harry, we're all going to hate Umbridge. Her lessons are going to suck, as they can't do anything else if they're designed by the Ministry, but Harry, do not upset her okay! No matter what she says about what happened last year, or about you, or Dumbledore, you do not want to get on the wrong side of her. I heard from someone what she does in detentions, she threatened them with one last night." I was pretty impressed with the lie, I've never been able to just make one up as I went along before.
"What does she do?" asked Harry, transfixed, a look of terror creeping along his face.
"I'll tell you some other time; this breakfast is worth keeping down." I knew this last comment would make him panic, and when it did I had to restrain from laughing.

As I had hoped, Harry did not pick a fight with Umbridge, instead he spent the lesson eyeing her with disgusted curiosity. Though that doesn't mean the day went perfectly. Potions was a devastating nightmare.
I had no idea how it was going to go when I sat down next to Hermione in Snape's dungeon, I had the same name as the woman he had secretly loved, and I looked a bit like her too, so it's hard to predict how he will react to me. It was my turn in the register, and he greeted me so similarly to how we had greeted Harry for the first time, "Miss Evans, ah, a new contributor to our class, how lovely." Draco and his friends sniggered. I saw Harry's hatred for Snape increase and his frown deepen, this was not going well.
"Here, sir."
"So I gathered, it was indeed hard to miss that dramatic entrance of yours Miss Evans." All I had done was tripped, why was he treating me like this? I was fuming, my breathing was heavy, eyes burning holes in his grease-wet hair.
"Lily," Hermione whispered frantically in my ear, "your hair's turned black." I looked around in surprise, to see everyone staring gob-smacked at me. "Oh, sorry." I muttered, quickly changing my hair back to it's red. Snape frowned at me, but didn't say anything, and just continued with his lesson.
