Chapter 12

I turned around and glared into the cold, grey eyes of Draco Mafloy.

"What do you want?"

"Oh Evans, you want to watch your tone when talking to a prefect!" he sneered, and pointed at his prefect badge. I scowled at him and then turned around to walk away.

"Not so fast, you going to tell us what you're doing wandering the corridors during class? Teachers finally given up on trying to teach a muggle magic have they?"

"I'm not a muggle, as you very well know - or do you want me to prove it? I learnt a useful hex just yesterday that could have your hands stuck together for a week, fancy it Malfoy?" It was his turn to scowl.

"Threatening a fellow student! Tut tut, ten points from Gryffindor, and let's see - another ten for being a muggle, and twenty for being out of class, oh and another ten from Gryffindor for being Potter's girlfriend. Wow, fifty points lost Evans, you're not having a good day are you?"

"I'm not a muggle and I'm not Harry's girlfriend! You can't just take fifty points off me for NOTHING!" Malfoy smirked, and so I started to walk away quickly before he took more from Gryffindor. Mafloy's cold laugh followed me up the corridor, I hate that boy, I really do.

I felt something hot fly past me. Malfoy had tried to hex me, but missed. As fast as I could I whipped out my wand, but it wasn't fast enough. Malfoy hit me with a spell I didn't know and I fell sideways down the stairs. With each step came another crack and blast of agonizing pain. By the time I reached the bottom I had already long since fallen unconscious.

"What happened to her?"

"I don't know."

"She'll be okay won't she?"

"Yes, I should think so, but keep your voices down, she needs rest!" Too late, I thought, I was already awake. I was lying in the hospital wing, my body felt numb and tense. What happened, why was I here?

I opened my eyes, finding my eyelids were heavy, as though I'd been sleeping for hours and hours. Beside my bed were Hermione, Ron, Harry and Madame Pomfrey. "Oh, my dear, you should go back to sleep, and you should leave, Lily needs rest, as I said before!" Madame Pomfrey said the last part to the other three, a scowl planted across her face. "I'm fine, really, they can stay." I tried to move my arm, but winced at the shock of pain that immediately ran through my body. "You are definitely not fine, you must have fallen down at least fifty steps! Drink this, now." I gave Madame Pomfrey a pleading look, she sighed and then said. "Ten minutes, but then you need to rest." I thought this was pretty generous for Madame Pomfrey, so I didn't complain as she walked away.

"What does she mean - I must have fallen down at least fifty steps?"

"Can't you remember anything? We found you at the bottom of the stairs, you were knocked out, so we guessed you'd fallen down them." Hermione was sitting in a chair but the table, her school bag still swung around her shoulder. "No, I - I don't remember. I got back from the funeral with Dumbledore... and then... and then I was... walking towards the common room I think."

"Do you remember anything else?"

"No... but... I don't know - I think I met Malfoy at some point... yeah I remember Malfoy." I saw them exchange nervous looks. My mind hurt to think about it, but I tried to push myself to remember exactly what happened, why I had fallen down the stairs - because I know I'm not stupid enough to just trip over my own feet or something.
