Chapter Two
Memories and Relapses
Everything came back to my mind of that night. It was my freshman year.
Maxx and I had been going out since I was in 7th grade and him in 8th. I had fallen in love with him. He had loved me too, but he had gotten me into bad habits. Things I would regret doing later in my life, then again I had stories to tell my future kids to warn then, so maybe I won’t.
We had been at a party by the lake doing drugs and drinking that night. I had just started high school and we went out to celebrate.
This drunk senior started talking to me, which was all we did, talk. Maxx had seen and taken it the wrong way; he thought something had happened since we both weren’t ourselves. Maxx had grabbed my arm and dragged me to the other side of the lake.
"Maxx let go. You’re hurting me." I said. He stopped and let go, "What the-" but I never got to finish the question because he had slapped me, hard.
"How could you Katie? Cheat on me with a senior?"
"I-" I tired to tell him he was wrong, that I would never do something like that to him, but he never let me finish. He had beat me that night and left me in the lake for dead. Someone who I thought loved me had left me for dead because he thought something that wasn’t true.
"If you live I'll come back for you love. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean too." he had said to me before I had passed out.
I had told my brother about what had happened; I left some things out like the drugs and leaving me for dead; as far as Kyle knew Maxx beat me up and I couldn’t fight back because I was drunk, he was the first one I told about that night.
We had thought he left for good, I had never told anyone what he had said though. But hearing his voice now made realize how wrong we were. How wrong I was for not believing he would come back.
Kyle and the guys had seen my reaction and were surrounding me asking me what was wrong as I listened to Maxx. I couldn’t concentrate on the guys though, my mind was fighting back the memories and feelings Maxx had given me before he left.
"I loved your outfit today Katie. Neon green shirt and black ripped skinny jeans and hoodie. We almost matched." I looked down to my outfit to see the exact outfit he had described.
I shuddered at the thought that he had been near me today and I hadn’t even seen him. If he could get near me like that and I don’t even notice then I would be paranoid for a very long time.
"Oh and tell your brother and his friends, who are surrounding you right now, that they can’t help you when I come for you." he hung up.
Without thinking I dropped the phone and ran outside. I looked around and didn’t see him anywhere, but he had to be somewhere out here. Why did he have to be so good at hiding? Why was he back? Why now? Why-
"Katie!" Kyle yelled.
I jumped and turned to see Kyle and the guys looking worried. Now that they finally caught my attention I wondered how worried I had made them.
"Who the hell was on the phone?!" he yelled at me. I could tell he was freaking out, Kyle always did know when something was wrong and right now it was pretty fucking obvious that something was definitely wrong.
"Maxx." I whispered. His eyes grew wide and angry as he and the guys dragged me back into the house.
Only Kyle, his friends, and my friends knew exactly what happened last year. Kyle had asked if he could tell his friends because they were like family. I had told him it was okay because I knew Kyle needed to rant to someone and that someone was not going to be me.
