Chapter Four
Once You're One, You're Always One
He laughed through the phone, “So you do remember me. Did you think I was someone else?”
“What do you want Jason?” I asked turning the phone volume down. I didn’t have to ask I knew what he wanted. He wanted me back as his dealer again.
He was also Maxx and mine’s favorite dealer and we were his favorite customers; which is why he had hired us in the first place.
“Katie,” he laughed again, “You know what I want. How are you and Maxx doing? I haven’t seen the two of you in almost a year.”
“You didn’t hear did you?” I asked turning slightly to see if anyone was being nosey.
“Hear what?” he asked curious.
“Well for one something happened, Maxx and I aren’t together anymore. We haven’t been for awhile and second I was clean for almost a year.”
“Was? As in you relapsed?”
“Yes. Something happened, but it won’t happen again. I’m done with all that stuff.”
“Sure you are,” he said sarcastically, “Once a druggie always a druggie Katie. If you need anything you know where to find me. See you around.”
“I doubt that. Bye Jason.” I hung up and sighed. First Maxx now Jason moves back. What’s next?
“Who was that Jason guy?” Kyle asked.
“You sure you all want to know?” I asked sitting down. Everyone nodded.
“No more secrets anymore.” Kyle said.
I sighed again, “He was mine and Maxx’s drug dealer and boss. We were, and still are apparently, his favorite customers. He moved the day before the accident because the police were catching up to him. He gave us a new contact and told us he could call when he got back from laying a false trail and he just had to return now.”
“Why were you two his favorite?” Nicole asked.
I shifted uncomfortably, “Uh, because we bought a lot from him and he trusted us a lot and we would always go with him to dealings and parties; it’s why he hired us.” I quickly whispered.
“Wait, you went to dealings? Not just your own?” Kyle asked shocked.
“That’s part of being hired. It was Maxx, our friend Trevor, and I. I was the negotiator and they were my guards. Get used to it Kyle. Looks like you’ll be hearing a lot about the old me and what I used to do.” I said because the expression on his face looked pissed.
“What else am I going to find out? Did you kill people too?” he asked. Yeah he was pissed.
“Well I didn’t, but Jason did and probably still does. Maxx was with him a few times to help with the body.”
“Oh my god Katie!” Kyle yelled, probably because I said it so calmly, “You should’ve gone to the police!”
“No I couldn’t! And none of you can either!”
“Why not?!”
“Because he would kill me. He’ll kill me if he knows I told everyone in this room. Why do you think I never go near the police station? Why I lied to the police about everything? If I, or anyone close to me, ever go near the station he’ll kill us. He acts first asks questions later. If it were Maxx or I he might kidnap us instead, but maybe not even that.” Everyone was quiet, “You didn’t think about that scenario did you?” I asked sarcastically.
