Chapter 7- Melissa
"Okay girls! That was great! However, we did have a couple stunt bobbles and other little mistakes. Let's do it one more time, and make sure to smile! Also make sure your motions are much tighter!" Coach R yells at us from the side of the dull blue mat, marked with our sweat and tears.
That is the fifth time she has told us to do it one more time. I think to myself. I must really love cheerleading if I'm able to deal with learning the new choreography at camp and do it over and over a billion times.
Going back across the mat to where I start the routine, I hear Coach R restart the music.
"5, 6, 7, 8," she counts us off, and right on cue I start my toe touch to a back tuck. The routine continues smoothly, with everyone doing their best. Every flip lands perfectly, every stunt goes straight up into the air like a skyscraper. Every jump looks absolutely beautiful. But now, it's time for the hardest part, the pyramid.
Okay. I tell myself, I can do this. We can do this. Feeling every beat, and exactly in time to the music, I put my hands on my bases shoulders. I know I have to trust them in order not to fall again. I can feel my backspot's hands on my hips, helping me, steadying me as I jump off the floor. My feet land directly into my bases hands, and I feel their fingers tighten around my shoes. I mentally prepare for the baby hop that I'm going to have to do flawlessly when one of the bases lets go of my foot. This is so I can pull my leg up into a body position. 1,2,3,4 pop! I catch my foot and pull it above my head. Yes! I think with a huge smile, we did it! Then, all of a sudden, I feel a hand beneath me quiver. Uh oh.
The next thing I know, I'm wobbling forwards and backwards, losing my balance and waving my arms. Then, I start tumbling

All I can see is black. What's going on?! What happened to me? I wonder. Then I start to hear lots of different voices.
"Mel! Mel! Are you okay?" "What happened to her?" "Can you hear us?" Someone is shaking me. They're all yelling at me. The darkness I see feels like it's consuming me. Why can't I tell them I can hear them?! Why aren't my lips moving?
"Melissa. Try to open your eyes if you can hear us. Don't try to do anything else. Focus on opening your eyes." Says Coach R. I can feel her hot breath on my face. She must be peering over me while she's talking. Suddenly, I feel two fingers on my neck.
"She has a pulse, so that's good." Coach R reassures the team. "She must be unconscious. Or she has a concussion. Go get me a bottle of water. It might help. Make sure it's cold, really cold."
Oh no. I think. I don't like where this is going. I hear the crinkle of plastic when Coach R grabs the bottle, and then she proceeds to dump its contents on my face. My eyes finally flutter open.
"What happened?" I ask in a complete daze. I finally realize my head hurts. Really bad, it feels like there's a bull ramming my forehead from the inside. Or a wrestler dropping a ton of bricks, picking it up, and then dropping it again. It feels awful.
"During the pyramid, you lost your balance and fell forward, out of your bases hands. They tried to catch you but you feel too far out too quickly. You landed on your head, which you need to ice. Jennifer, go get her some ice please." Coach R says looking down at me.
Looking for Jennifer in the sea of sweaty confused faces wasn't hard. Her bright red hair stood out easily. She squats to give me the ice she is already holding, and asks "Are you okay?" Her usually cheerful face is clouded with worry.
"Yeah, I'll be okay." I try to smile back at her as I hold the ice pack up to my forehead. However, my grin turns out more like a grimace.
"Okay girls, go ahead and get your bags! It's already 3 o'clock! You all can go home. Make sure y'all shower, you stink!" she says, plugging her nose with a smile. "Be here bright and early tomorrow! 8 AM sharp!"
Glancing through the window at the rain, I wonder how on earth I'm going to get up, let alone actually drive home. The rain is coming down in huge, angry raindrops. Like the sky is furious with someone or something and trying to punish it.
"Mel, I can drive you home if you want. Just go by and get your car later," says Jen. What a good friend.
I smile at her, a real one this time, and reply "You're a lifesaver."
After getting home and taking a much needed shower and nap, I sit down to watch a little Modern Family on the couch in the family room.
I hear the front door open and Jen plops herself down on the couch next to me. She would just let herself in with the hidden key.
"Hey." She says as she steals the remote from me. She also pauses the TV. Rude. I stick my tongue out at her.
"Hello.. What do you want to talk about?" I ask with a raised eyebrow. "You better have a good reason for coming in here and pausing my Modern Family.
"I was just wondering how it's going with you and your Skype Boy." She says with a wink. "Are you two going to still talk after school starts in two weeks? Are you going to be friends? Do you like him? Does he like you? Why don't you ever give me any details?"
"Wow, aren't you just full of questions." I laugh, "I don't really know. I mean, I hope we still talk because yes I do like him. But I'm not sure if the feeling is mutual. Plus, he's moving soon and so he will probably be really busy with that. You know, getting settled in and what-not."
"Well, when you get the chance, you two should talk about all this! That way you're on the same page. It would suck if you just stopped talking all together. And why aren't you using your ice pack missy! You probably concussed!!!" She glares at me as she gets up to get my freezing, bright blue ice pack.
"I don't like it! It's way too cold!" I say with a little frown.
Rolling her hazel eyes, she replies "Wow. I'm leaving now, you get some rest. And don't forget to tell your parents about what happened today. You also need to go pick up your car! You know what; actually, I'll just call your mom and tell her. Don't worry about it, you need to relax."
After she walks out, I realize she's left the TV paused. Wow. SO nice of her.
Pretty soon, I end up giving in to the loud throbbing in my head. Closing my eyes, I finally jump of the cliff of being awake into the sweet abyss of sleep.
