Chapter 10- Melissa
I hate the way a hospital smells. It’s almost as if everything is too clean. Add bright white fluorescent lights, uncomfortable beds, an overwhelming feeling of dread, and it’s definitely on my top five places to avoid spending the night in. Much less sleeping there for a week.
Last Tuesday at cheer camp when I fell during pyramid, I ended up injuring myself a lot worse than anyone thought I had. As I reach up to touch the large, hard knot at the top of my head, the IV attached to my arm stretches a little too tight. Ouch, another thing I won’t miss about this place.
Tuesday afternoon after my mom brought me my laptop, Mystery Boy was so sweet. I explained to him that after we ended our first call of the day, a lot of really crazy things happened that night. According to my parents, I had a Grand Mal seizure. I don’t remember it, so I guess I was completely unconscious.
However, apparently I collapsed out of my chair, screamed, and all my muscles convulsed uncontrollably. My eyes and face twitched. My arms, legs, hands, and feet shook and contracted. My sister cried, and dad called nine-one-one.
The ambulance came whirring to my house, the bright lights and siren flared. My mom rode with me in the ambulance and my dad and sister met her in the emergency room. They did a lot of tests on me, and gave me medicine to make sure all my organ systems were still working.
When I finally woke up, I was completely disoriented in a bright, white hospital room. My family was sitting on chairs in the corner of the room. They appeared to have been crying. A nurse and doctor were standing over me.
The nurse had short blonde hair, and friendly grey eyes. He looked like he’s been doing this a long time. His name was Nurse Justin. The doctor looked young, around his late twenties or early thirties, and he had dark, black hair. His name was Dr. Constantino.
He informed me that I have head trauma induced epilepsy. I seized again while they were doing tests on me in the operating room, however since this started so suddenly, I may grow out of it. He also told me that I’m stuck taking anti-seizure medicine for at least two years. I’ll have to come in for regular tests to see how I’m improving.
Mystery Boy was so supportive when I told him all this. He listened to me intently the whole time, staring at me with those big brown eyes full of concern. It made my heart melt. We’ve talked every day since then, and hopefully today we will talk again without having to do it from this awful place. I get to go home today!
Right then, my parents walked in holding hands. Gross. I think as I wrinkle my nose.
“Hi sweetheart! The doctors just cleared you to go home now! We brought you a change of clothes.”
Nurse Justin walks in and begins to undo my uncomfortable IV.
“I bet you’re super excited to get home,” he grins at me “Make sure to go by your pharmacy and pick up all your medicine. Get lots of rest. Email or call here sometime and give me an update on how you’re doing! You’re finally free,” he laughs as he walks out of the room.
I climb out of the bed and take the bag my mom hands me to the bathroom. How’d she know my favorite shirt and jeans? Sometimes she creeps me out; she knows just a little too much about me. The bathroom is colorless, and it has even more of an intense clean smell. Getting out of there as fast as I can, I practically run out the door and down the stairs with my parents rushing to catch up with me.
After hanging out with my family for a few hours, we watched a movie and played a game, I’m finally able to pull out my laptop and call Mystery Boy. Sitting in my bed, calling M.B., it’s my favorite pastime now. I keep reminding myself to ask his name, but it keeps slipping my mind. Even though it’s almost like second nature for me to call him now, my heart still races every time his gorgeous face fills the screen. All I can see below his neck is the top of his blue polo, but he looks like he works out. His tan skin and muscular arms make my mind wander where it shouldn’t.
“Well hello there. You’re home again!” he says with a glowing smile. “Bet you’re glad to be out of that hospital.”
“You don’t even know how bad it was there!” I pretend to pout. “But it’s all better now. Can you believe school is so close?”
“Unfortunately, I can,” he laughs and my stomach fills with butterflies. “My mom has forced my brother and me to buy clothes at three different stores today, just because they were on sale for school.”
“Ha-ha! Your mom sounds awesome! Quit complaining, I’d love to go shopping at three stores!”
“I’d love it too, if I was with you,” M.B. replies with a wink, and I can feel my awful blush sneaking up my neck.
All of a sudden, I hear a female’s voice, who I presume to be his mom yelling “Boys! Abigail! Dinner!” Now he’s the one blushing.
“You heard that, didn’t you?” he says looking absolutely embarrassed. “I’ll call you back after dinner, okay?”
“Of course,” I say with a smile, “and now I think your mom sounds even more awesome.” I laugh as I hang up. Mystery boy always makes my day better. Then I remember, “Wait! What’s...” he’s already hung up. Maybe I’ll remember sooner next time.
I log off Skype, and close my laptop. When I look up, my best friend is standing over me.
“How long have you been there?” I ask her completely surprised.
“About thirty seconds. Guess what! A new family moved into my neighborhood last week and I wanted to come tell you about it at the hospital, but they weren’t letting you have visitors when I went by.” Oh great, I think, she’s rambling. “The new neighbors have three kids, and one is this super-hot guy and we went on an almost date and I think I’m starting to like him, and he’s got perfect brown hair and brown eyes!”
“Wait, slow down and take a breath silly. What’s his name?” I reply with a raised eyebrow.
