"Well, what do you think?" I was standing in front of my desk, tablet propped up with Olivia on video call. She was scrutinising my outfit as I stood, hands splayed out and expression worried. I'd had a rest and then had almost immediately been on the phone to her. Yes, we'd covered the night before in our conversation but once I'd told her about Nathan that had almost been forgotten. Priorities; I'm not sure we had ours sorted, but I would blame that on being under the influence of an incredibly attractive guy.
"You really don't have any skirts or dresses?" Her response wasn't reassuring. I made a face.
"Liv, you know my wardrobe is kitted out for running and not much else."
"We are going to need to go clothes shopping before university," she clicked at her tongue, leaning closer towards her own screen. I could see her bedroom behind her, covered in posters from the west end. Her wardrobe was ajar as it was bulging with colourful clothes. She was a fashion magpie in comparison to my own safer tastes, "I wish I could come over with some outfits. We're basically the same size but after last night mum and dad are wanting a 'family night in'." She rolled her eyes and I winced.
"I don't really blame them," I admitted but turned away to look at myself in the mirror. "It's not a disaster though, is it?"
I'd truthfully made quite a bit of an effort. I was wearing a pair of light denim shorts that showed off my toned legs. They were a part of me I didn't mind exposing as I spent most races with them on display. Over the top of that I'd chosen a loose red tank top that floated down around my hips that had a colourful butterfly decal on the front. I left my blonde hair down and had applied some mascara around my blue eyes to help them stand out. I knew I wasn't unattractive, but there was something about trying to appear attractive that made me uncomfortable. I'd never had someone to try to appeal to before but now all I could think of was Nathan and what he'd be wearing. And what the other girls at the party would be wearing as well. And if they'd look better than me. I nibbled my bottom lip, glancing down at my black converse all star shoes that finished the outfit.
"You're gorgeous, Lu. I just wish I could get you into a dress," Olivia sighed. I turned back to her, walking over to sit on my stool before the desk. I shook my head.
"Really, with how lost I'm feeling about Nathan right now I'd let you dress me any way you wanted. I have no idea what I'm doing."
"Oh, that's dangerous," my friend giggled, but seeing the look on my face she continued.
"Don't look so worried, monkey. He invited you, he grabbed you in water polo and he clearly said, let me quote," she coughed and then put on one of her famous Shakespearean voices. "I saw what I wanted and took it," she gave me an exaggerated wink. "Opportunistic."
I laughed but poked my tongue out at her, though only because she wasn't there to shove, "Hey, that's what he said."
"I know, gets me hot under the collar and I wasn't even there to hear it," she smirked, tucking back a wild curl from her rosey cheeks. "You have to keep me updated."
I looked down at my phone; it was almost time to go. I slid it into my pocket before focusing back on Olivia, "What if I'm blowing this all out of proportion? I mean he's from a completely different life from me. What if he's just looking for a summer fling? Do I want to be his fling?"
