"We definitely should not have had school today." Said Maya, looking out the window in the hallway.
"Come on, Maya. We would have had to make up the day at the end of the year."
"We had school off because it was a but too icy, once, but we don't have today off instead. We are gonna get stuck."
"I doubt that."
The bell rang and the girls headed to Mr.Matthews class. About half way through the class, the phone to the office rang. Cory picked up. Everyone waited as he listened.
"Okay class. It looks like we're stuck."
"Told you." Said Maya.
"For how long?" Asked Riley.
"Maybe until 4, maybe until tomorrow."
"What?" Said Farkle in panic.
"Farkle we have oxygen." Said Maya.
"Well, we still have to finish class." Said Cory.
The class continued and the day ended.
"Dad? Can we stay in here?"
"Sure."
"What do you want to do?" Asked Lucas.
"We can just talk, I guess." Said Riley.
"Okay."
"Okay."
"So."
"So."
"Do you guys know how awkward this is?" Asked Farkle.
"It's not that bad."
"Hold on a second." Said Farkle pulling her aside.
"Just be natural, Riley. Or else that relationship is going nowhere."
"But what about Maya."
"I don't think she likes him like you do." He said.
Lucas stood as they talked. He spotted Maya at the desk closest to the back door. She had a textbook open and she appeared to be looking for something in the back. He thought about walking over to her but didn't. Maya just barely saw him staring at her out of the very corner of her eye and could feel his eyes on her but she didn't look up. She didn't want to look in his eyes. She didn't want to feel the heartbreak again. She didn't want to be involved with him anymore. He just dragged her along with him and the further he brought her, the more she would have to travel to get home and home was feeling okay.
Cory was still at his desk and noticed Maya in the back with the textbook. He was curious so he walked over to her.
"What are you looking for?"
"I wanted to learn more about the renaissance."
"Really, you wanted to learn something that you didn't have to?"
"How did this come about? It seemed like one day people were only focused on staying alive and the next they had all of this time to enjoy making art and new inventions."
"It began in Italy. Italy is on the mediterranean sea were there was a lot of trade and exchange new ideas. Trade allowed them to make money and people became more wealthy, which gave them more time to do things they enjoy."
"Like art, science and literature."
"Exactly."
"Thanks." She said, smiling.
"I love to teach." He said, then walking to his desk.
As this was happing, Riley went back to Lucas.
"Hi."
"Hi." She said.
"How did you like class?"
"It was good. How did you like class?"
"It was good." He said sneaking a look over at Maya who was taking to Cory
"Good."
"So, do you guys want to get some homework done?"
"Sure." He said noticing Maya now alone. "Maya? Wanna join us to do some homework?"
"In a minute." She said looking more at all of them than at just Lucas. She went back to reading the page.
