Riley and Lucas were in the hallway, getting a snack from the vending machine and Farkle and Maya were in the classroom when Maya had to use the restroom. She walked out of the classroom. She saw two people kissing by the machine. Riley and Lucas. Her heart fell hard to the bottom of her stomach. They pulled away from each other, noticing her.
"Maya- we..." Lucas began. Maya but her lip, nodded, and then walked away.
By the time Lucas and Riley could figure out what happened, Maya was out of sight. They ran after her. Riley looked in the bathroom and and Lucas looked in English and told Farkle to look. Farkle looked in Math and then Riley realized, Maya would be drawing. She went quickly to the art room with Lucas and Farkle.
"Ms. Kossel, was Maya in here?"
"For a moment, she came to get her sketchbook. She left it in here."
"Was she upset."
"Well she didn't look upset but she was a little distracted."
"Okay, thank you." She said, walking out.
"Man, where is she?" They continued to look around the school as Maya stood in the Library, her sketchbook on the table as she scanned the spines of books, thinking about how she had never been phased about the incredible ability to read. To explore other peoples story's. To find pleasure in theirs when you can't find pleasure in yours. She heard the door open and moved behind the shelf.
"Why would she be in here?" Asked Farkle. "She hates reading."
"And she's really slow."
It's an act, Maya thought.
"Just trust me." Said Lucas. "We've looked everywhere else."
Maya slid behind another shelf, unnoticed. They passed the shelf, not noticing her. She moved to the next and sat down were she would not be seen unless she drew attention to herself. She didn't want to get between their happiness.
"Hey guys!" Said Lucas. "It's her sketchbook."
"Are you sure it is?"
"It looks like hers." He said, brushing his fingers over it and than lifting it up. Lucas sat down with it.
The current page was of the books on the shelves. She used shading to show the dim light and drew every book in detail. There were many and they were each different sizes and angles. It was incredible.
"Guys, look at this." They all came over to look.
"Wow!" Said Riley.
"That's the best drawing I've ever seen from her."
"She never shows them anymore."
He turned to the page before. There was a pencil drawing of apartment buildings. The details coming down to the brick. There were faint reflections in the window and each door was unique.
He flipped to another. On the bottom was a sphere with a chain attached to it, leading up to a heart, being strangled and held down. His heart flooded. Is this how she felt? Was this because of him? He took a deep breath and turned the page.
There was a drawing of a girl with red hair and a brunette guy kissing but only there hair was colored.
The next was of hands strangling a heart. His eyes bulged.
"Riley, did Maya ever show you this?"
"No, that must be why she doesn't show them. She doesn't want us to know how she feels." Maya finally left the room, unnoticed.
There was another. There were two girls and a boy on the page. One girl with dark hair stood on one side, watching, sadly. On the other were two people with lighter hair. The guy looked a little bit past the girl in front of him and more towards the girl with dark hair. The girl in the middle was half monster. Underneath was writing.
I'm always in the way
He bit his lip so hard that blood seeped out of it but it didn't feel pain.
"I made her feel this way. She must hate me."
"She doesn't hate you."
"These drawings are scary Riley. I put her together and then I broke her." They ran out to look for her.
