"How did it go?" Dad asks me.
"Well. I like him." I smile. He ruffles my hair.
"Good. You seem happier, at least."
And I am. I can't wait to see Frank again. I wouldn't mind spending some more time with him.
Later on, my phone rings. I answer it without even realising. It's Mary.
"Sophia?" She sounds panicked.
"Mum?" I frown. "What's wrong?"
"Oh, it's been so long since I've heard your voice!" She cries. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, Mum. I'm fine." I say. Dad opens my bedroom door and looks at me. He mouths that dinner is ready. I nod at him. "Look, I'm gonna go and have tea, but I'll call you later?" I ask.
"They've released her from hospital. She's normal and healthy." She says. I gasp.
"Really? Oh, my God. That's great!" I exclaim. "What have you called her?"
"Elise Watson." She replies. Elise... my little sister. There's a pause. "Are you coming home, Sophia?"
"I... I don't know." I stutter. Dad is watching me like a hawk. "Listen, I'll pop up sometime soon, okay? To see Elise. But I won't stay." I say.
"Okay, Sweetie. I'll leave you be now. I'll call later. Bye."
"Bye." I whisper and hang up. Dad is still looking at me. He looks angry.
"You're going back?"
"That was a private phone call, Dad." I mutter.
"After everything I've done for you, you're going back?" He shouts at me. I frown.
"Don't be like that," I sigh. "I want to go and see my little sister, that's all. I'm not going back there."
"The sister they didn't even tell you about?" He scoffs. "They only want to take you away from me, Sophia. Well, I won't let them. You're not going back there. Ever."
"Dad! What do you mean? You're acting crazy." I stand up. He blocks my way out of the door.
"No, I'm not. They took you away from me before and they're not going to do it again, Sophia. You're staying here." He says.
"You fucking control freak. I'm going to see them, only for a few hours. I'll come straight back, I promise." I bite my lip nervously.
"Your dinner is ready. Come downstairs." He says, turning away. I begin to worry.
"Dad? Are you alright?" I ask, catching hold of his arm.
"I'm fine. Come on." He says and we go downstairs. I think maybe work is stressing him out. He's acting really weird. We sit down in the dining room and eat our food in silence. I feel really awkward.
"You can't stop me from leaving, Dad." I say. We look at each other over the table that seems to go on for miles, separating us even further.
"No, I can't. But, if you leave even to visit, I can make sure that you won't have a home to come back to." He says. I gasp.
"Dad, you wouldn't do that." I whisper. I know full well that he would.
"I would and I will if you go to see them." He raises his eyebrows.
"Why? Why would you do this?" I ask. "You're crazy."
"I'm doing this because you don't need them. It's a part of your life that you would be better without."
"No, the part I'm better off without is you, father. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be so fucked up if you hadn't made me shoot my own mother." I snap.
"Get upstairs." He shouts. "Now!" He actually screams at me. I grab my dish and throw it at him, missing by a wide berth.
"Fine!" I yell. I run upstairs, slamming the door behind me.
It feels good to have a proper teenage sulk. I should do it more often. But this is actually quite serious. If he won't let me out of the house, that could pose as quite a problem. I don't want to move out, but I do want to see Elise, my little sister who I thought was going to die. I need to see her.
I sit on my bed and think about what I can do. I hear Dad shouting from downstairs. Work has stressed him out, I can tell.
I decide to sneak out. He won't catch me if I do it in the night. I'll go out for a few hours and come back in the early morning. He'll never find out.
I stay in my room for a few hours, until 10 pm and then I go downstairs.
"Sophia?" He asks when I'm by the door.
"I'm going to sleep now." I tell him. He narrows his eyes at me.
"Alright, then. I'll see you tomorrow."
Not even an apology! The bastard. I sigh and go upstairs.
Sorry, this was another kind of filler chapter. The next one will be better, I promise. :)
