It'd been a long day,
And as she walked through the gate,
She heard her parents arguing,
From a long way.
She swore she could smell the alcohol
That burnt through his mouth,
The tears that her momma cried.
She walked in the door,
And into the room.
Saw her dad screaming, reeking of booze.
Her mom, she was shouting,
Telling her to leave.
But they were not listening,
To her voice too frail and weak...
Darling, if I was there,
I'd hold you close to me.
Darling, if I was there,
I'd never let anything hurt you,
Never let, those mean words slip outta their mouths.
If only, I was there.
She ran to her room, to escape away,
From the disastrous place she called home.
She locked herself in,
And closed her eyes tight,
Wishing she was held.
But darling,
If I was there,
I'd hold you close to me.
I'd whisper to you gently,
And comb through your hair.
I'd treat you like a princess,
And I'd be your bride,
We'd walk down the aisle
In each others arms,
We'd sing songs out loudly to everyone,
If I was only there.
But since I'm not there,
The best I can do,
Is sing a sweet song to you,
A melody or two,
I'll talk to you daily,
To make sure your fine,
But I still wish I were there.
