Laina can't be dead. She can't be. It's just not possible.

Then, the silver ring around her pupils flicker and then disappear. "Jamie, I'm not dead. She's a liar, I swear!" The silver ring is back.

I walk over to Doc. "We have to get that Soul out of her." I tell him in a low voice.

Doc nods, and then tells Jared, Ian, and Melanie. Ian nods and plays along. "Autumn Skies, Doc here would like to check to make sure that your host is still intact. Would it be alright with you if we took you back to our sickroom?"

She considers this for a moment, then nods.

Uncle Jeb unhooks her from the shackles on her wrists, and Jared and Ian lead her to the hospital. We get there quickly, and lay her on a table. She doesn't object. Jared gives her something- I don't know what it is, but I guess it's safe- and she pretty much passes out.

After that, Wanda, Doc, and Ian work quickly to remove Autumn Skies, and then they carefully place her in a cryotank.

"Okay Jamie, they're done with her." Mel says at last. I sigh in relief. Hopefully, Autumn Skies was lying and Laina is still alive. If she isn’t, I have no idea what I’ll do. Be upset because she's dead? Probably, but it wouldn't last for long, right? I mean, I haven't seen her in how long now?

Jared picks Laina and sits her down on a cot. I pull a chair over and sit down next to her. I hear footsteps running in, and then they stop. "Where's the other Soul?" Sunny's voice drifts over to me.

Ian's voice is next. "We just took her out."

"Well who's body is it?" Kyle asks. "Or is it just a random stranger?"

"Jamie and I know her." Mel replies. "They were friends."

Someone sits down beside me, but I don't look up. "So how'd you two meet?" Jared asks me quietly.

I shrug, resting my hands on the white sheets. I'm not sure whether or not I want to hold her hand or not. I decide not, since it would be kind of awkward if she woke up. "We were neighbors. Before this whole host and Souls thing, Mel used to watch her when her parents went to work during the summer and on the weekends."

Jared nods. "You two were close?"

"Best friends."

"Bet you loved that when you had to leave." His sarcasm is obvious.

"I didn't even think about it. For two or three years I haven't thought about her." I look up at him. "Is that wrong?"

Jared shrugs and shakes his head a little. "I don't know, Jamie. But you were running for your life , so it's not like you had time to reflect on the past."

I nod. I didn't have time to do anything but think about running and surviving. The only thing I ever had any dreams about were my parents and what it might be like to be a host. I hadn't been able to concentrate on anything else when we were running.

"But you'd think that when I came here-"

"Jamie." Jared cuts me off. "Anyone in their right mind would understand that you've been through a lot. So you didn't think about her. Big deal. You've always been worried about when your next meal is more than almost anything else. No one can blame you."

I let out a sigh. "I know, but-"

Laina's body jerks and she lets out a moan. Everyone in the room falls silent, watching her face carefully. For a minute nothing happens, and I think it might have been my imagination, a hopeful mind trick. But then she lets out a breath, and her eyes snap open.

A/N: Should I continue this story? It's kinda weird and random..
