Chapter 1
The door cracked straight down the middle with the force of the kick. Twenty Guardians flooded into the room stabbing my captors with wooden stakes. I was ready to run, having unlocked the handcuffs days before. I flung the wooden handcuff contraption in the corner behind me and ran towards the Guardians.
Then I hesitated. I didn‘t know who to run to. I let my instincts take over and suddenly knew who to run to. His hair was ash blonde, short, slightly spiked and messed with hair gel. His eyes were sparkling blue with anger. He grabbed my arm and held me behind him, protecting me from the oncoming murderers.
There were more Guardians in front of us now. “Go!” he pushed me backwards and out of the door, following close behind. I hesitated outside the door, adjusting my eyes to the dim light of the hotel corridor. “Come on,” the Guardian murmured, grabbing my hand and guiding me towards the stairs.
We passed more Guardians, storming to subdue the dead. We ran fast. We got to the bottom of the stairs and I hunched over, gasping for air.
“We have to leave, Princess,” he warned me, “they might manage to escape.” I nodded in agreement, unable to get the necessary air to speak, and let him lead me to a black truck.
He opened the door for me and helped me into the passenger seat before running round the front, climbing into the truck and starting up the engine. He started speeding out of the hotel car park.
“You call me ‘Princess’ ever again and I will personally kill you.” I warned the Guardian through shaky breaths. He laughed once, humourlessly.
I watched the hotel disappear out of view in the wing mirror. Had I not been forced into a room and locked away for three months, I could have enjoyed a relaxing stay there.
“How did you find me?” I whispered after regaining most of my much-needed oxygen.
“Professor Winters.” the Guardian said simply. “She’s been having dreams for a while about that hotel and room 222.”
“She got my message.” I sighed with relief.
“She had a feeling that you were behind it after a week or so when she had the same dream in the middle of the day.” he said gently.
“It was a vision actually.” I corrected.
“Of course,…” I gave him a cautionary look and he cut the sentence short after not finding a suitable replacement for ‘Princess’.
“Who are you?” I asked after a few moments of awkward silence.
“Guardian Lockford.” he replied.
“Do you have a first name?” I liked to be on first name basis with as many Guardians as possible, even if they weren’t mine.
“Hunter. And what can I call you, if I’m not allowed to say Princess?” I let him off that time.
“Just Venus is fine.” I tapped my fingers on my knees anxiously. I wasn’t safe yet, I needed to get inside the school gates before I could relax.
