-Chapter 2-

The road was fairly flat and calm considering it was gravel.

As we got closer I realized that we were driving into a small campsite. It wasn’t a normal campsite with tents though, it was a huge area of land filled with log cabins. Modern log cabins with mini balconies.

I noticed something odd as we approached. The sun was starting to climb over the horizon, step by step. The camp was obviously only made up of Guardians and some feeders meaning that the time frame would be backwards. People would be getting ready for bed or, if they weren’t, they would be waiting for news of the rescue. But no lights were on inside the cabins, even though we loved the night we still put dim lights on just to make it easier to see, straining your eyes constantly can damage them, and the curtains were all open. The windows were facing towards the sun meaning the occupants would have been uncomfortable inside. Not yet burning, Guardians had a higher resistance to sunlight.

“Something’s wrong.” I told Hunter. He nodded in agreement.

We stopped outside the largest cabin, obviously camp headquarters where everything was organised. No one came outside when our arrival could have clearly been heard.

“I’m gonna see what’s wrong.” Hunter informed me. I moved to open my door. “No, stay in the car. You don’t want to get hurt, the morning sun is strong here.” I remained seated obediently as Hunter jumped out of the car and grabbed a wooden stake from underneath the driver’s seat. He shut the car door gently and made his way towards the front door of the cabin. He pressed against it lightly and it swung open with ease. I waited for him to go completely inside and give him enough time to start investigating. Then I grabbed my hoodie off of the back seat and shoved it on, pulling the hood up so that I was protected from the sunlight. I then hopped out of the car and went round the back of the main cabin.

I was halfway when I tripped on something. I turned back to see a heavy wooden stake abandoned on the floor. I picked it up tentatively. If I was attacked I could try and whack whoever was nearby round the back of the head with it and cause a hesitation. It didn’t matter that I didn’t know how to stake anyone, I could scream out for Hunter’s help. I needed to grip something to make me feel safer at that moment in time.

I clutched the stake in both hands against my chest. The wood was smooth and the handle was engraved for better grip. On the top of the handle there was a thick, empty circle. The sign of an Immortal. I struggled to hold onto the stake after that. It kept threatening to fall out of my hands as they shook wildly.

On this cabin, the balcony wrapped right around. I carried on round the cabin to the back where there were a set of steps up to the small balcony. In front of me there was an open plan seating area that seemed to be half inside and half outside. It would have looked almost peaceful and relaxing except for the fact that there were two bodies on the floor.

At first, all I could see was blood, blood, blood…and guts. Blood was starting to trickle across the wooden floor to the edge of the balcony and drip off. It was like a vision, it wasn’t possible. But it had happened and was happening right now.

Then shock jolted through me like lightening. I recognised one of the faces…Felix! I bit my lip hard to stop the scream from leaving my lips and flooding the silence. Blood started to fill my mouth and it was all I could taste but I didn’t care. His face was filled with shock, a different shock to mine but a shock nonetheless, his skin was so pale, paler than normal. I looked down his body. There were several bite marks at his throat, the bite marks were completely dry with no traces of blood. He’d been drained. I continued to look, it was a big mistake. His shirt had been ripped and torn and his stomach, from the bottom of his ribs to the top of his pelvis, had been ripped apart. His guts were lying on the floor beside him and flies were starting to settle on his corpse.
