"Guys, this is ocean."
"Hi," he waved at us, but quickly put his hand down when Fennec said "How original. Ocean waves.""So," Kaliah said, taking off her glasses and circling him. She closed her eyes, and when she opened them, both hers and Ocean's glowed white. "Why does he know who we are, and where we're going? Let's see... You have an unintentional mind block up, probably guarding the memories of a person. Mother? Girlfriend?"
He shook his head, unable to speak. She stopped, and turned to look at him.
"Boyfriend? We won't judge."
He paused, and then shook his head once more.
"No? You sure? Alright, moving on." She started counting off fingers. "Best friend, brother, teacher, sister-"
His eyes widened, glowing brighter.
"Ooh. Sister. Is she cute?"Fennec punched her shoulder, and their eyes flickered back to normal for a moment. She shook it off, and they began to glow again.
"Just relax. We need to know if we can trust you. Oh! The barrier's down! Good boy." She stopped walking and put a finger to his temple. Her eyes glowed brighter, and she stared off at the wall."Half siblings, both accidents. She's one year younger than you, half selkie, pretty too! Lucky her. Separated at a young age, you lived with your dad, she with her grandfather in human form."
"Stop it."
"She doesn't know you're a merman, not to mention she would hate you if she did. She's been raised that way. She doesn't even remember your name." She smirked, obviously enjoying his discomfort.
"Cut it out!"
"She doesn't know she's a Selkie, and you haven't had contact with her for years. But you know enough about her to find her. You keep a picture of her, and talk to it like she was there. You've even gotten yourself to believe that she'll be happy to know, be happy to leave the only home she can remember!"
"Quit it!" He screamed, and his eyes began to glow brighter and brighter, while Kaliah froze, and began to tremble. She lifted her finger, shocked, and broke the connection. "That's more than we need, anyways." She took the scarf off of, and shook out her wings. Ocean stopped shaking and slid to the floor, muttering.
"She really is a demon.""You saw my past too. What exactly did you see?" She leaned forward with a sneer.
"You really are a demon." He whispered. She flashed a smile. "That much I know. What else? Tell me what you saw."
Adrian grabbed my arm, and looked up at me. His eyes were wide with fright, and he was half shaking.
"She's finally gone off the deep end."
"No," we stood and watched as she taunted Ocean. I pulled Adrian closer, patting his head. "Kaliah went off the deep-end a long time ago. She just hides it very well."~*~
"So Jess, where should we get off? I know two different stops. One is closer to the door, but the other's in a place with less video surveillance."
We had gotten Kaliah to stop harassing Ocean, and everyone had gone to change clothes. Boys to the men's restroom, and girls to the women's. Kaliah was trying to figure out where exactly we should go, and I, the nearest person available, was her trusted confidant."It's your choice, you know way more about the subject than anbody else. You're probably the only one who paid attention in classes." She shrugged in agreement.
"Well, I do know that once we get off, that's it. No more spells. They have guards that can tell when people like us use magic." She grabbed a few things from her bag, and wrestled a shirt over her head. I could hear the snip of scissors, but thought nothing of it.
"Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. You're right though, Miss Senths said something like that in history class. You know, last term?"
"Yeah. Last term."
An awkward silence followed, broken by her struggling into clothes.
"Well," she pulled one last thing over her head, and smiled wide. "Do I look normal?"She had on a pair of blue jeans, sunglasses, an old grey t shirt, and her wings somehow folded into a backpack. (She later told me that she had to cut holes out of the bag and the shirt to fit her wings through.) Her hair somehow hid her horns, pulled into plaits.
"Absolutely human. What about me?"
I had a pair of blue rolled up blue jeans, a white T shirt with a rabbit on it, my backpack full of supplies, and a hat to hide my ears. She looked at me for a moment, and I think I saw her blush a little. But, then again, I never could tell.
"Downright stunning. Let's see how the boys fared."We grabbed our things, and left the bathroom. The boys were sitting in the car we started in, playing a game of cards that Fennec had produced from his pocket. Ocean was wearing the same thing as before, minus the hoodie. Adrian had taken his off too, and slipped on a new shirt that didn't have our school's name stamped across the back. Fennec had gotten ahold of a pair of my sweatpants, (when I confronted him he said it was only to hide the tail) and had the same hat as before. They looked up when we entered the car, Ocean shrinking back from Kaliah out of fear.
"So," I clasped my hands and grinned, ignoring Oceans terror. It was unbefitting, he being the oldest in the group. "You all ready to see America?"
