The whole ride there Alex still tried to talk to Emily, reassure her that everything would be okay. When they finally came out of surgery the doctor went to tell Emily's parents the good news, she would live. Alex was overjoyed but refused to let herself relax until Emily opened her eyes. Every day for the next week that Emily was in a coma Alex stayed by her side until the day she finally woke up. Alex was overjoyed but when she tried to tell Emily about what happened, Emily couldn't hear her. "Mom, I'm okay you don't need to keep crying." Emily reassured her mother, but that wasn't really the reason she was crying. Emily's mother was about to tell her that Alex, her best friend, is dead.
"Honey, there is no easy way to tell you but Alex-" Emily smiled and her mom broke off mid sentence crying.
"I know mom," Emily explained, getting her mother's and Alex's attention. "She was with me the whole time. She kept telling me that I had people that loved me and she wanted me to grow up and have a wonderful life. Alex told me that no matter how much this would hurt or how much I would miss her, that I needed to live for her." Tears welled up in her eyes but she still smiled when she whispered out the next few words. "You can go now Alex. I know you miss your mom."
