On My Own

Chapter two

My roommate saw me entering the room but was still on the phone. I chose the only availible bed because she had already claimed hers.
I put my bag on the floor, laid on my new bed and looked around.
The room was small but spacious. The walls were white, and I was sure that in a month or two I would be sick of them. There were two medium sized windows which were lighting most of the room; one on my side, the other on my roommate's side. A light blue curtain with green and pink swirls framed the windows.
Two comfortable beds sat facing each other. Two brown desks were set near the beds, a bookcase on top of them. I was so releived when I found out that I didn't have to share a bathroom with the other girls but I still had to share one with my roommate. Talking about my roommate, she's now swearing at the phone. By the sound of it, she's going through a harsh break up.

Another 5 minutes past, and she was finally off the phone.
" E-Ex-cuse m-m-me" she said weakly as she went to the bathroom to freshen up. Once back out, we started talking.
" Harsh break up, huh?" I asked
"Yeah, can we not talk about it?" My roommate replied.
"Sure , I understand."
There was an awkward silence which made me uncomfortable."My name is Amber, Amber Colman." I exlaimed, "what's yours?" I continued.
" Don't bother with the introduction, I have better things to do." She said rudely while taking gum. My roommate started chewing really loudly.
"Can you -"
"Wow, first 10 minutes and I'm already sick of you!" She abruptly cut me, took her bag and left the room without forgetting to slam the door. I sighed and decided to start unpacking.
By the time I was nearly done, a voice in the intercom said that dinner starts in 10 minutes. I took my phone _ and a map ( Forkren high was huge) _ and went to the cafeteria. Hopefully I will make some friends.
The cafeteria was very crowded. Noise suddenly filled my ears and I wished that I had stayed in my room. Most of the tables were already taken so I didn't know where to sit. My first instinct was to go looking for my roommate but that thought completely dissolved when I spotted her talking to the guy I had met, Derek. Unexpectedly , my stomach tied in knots. Were they close ? Did he like her ? Wait- why would I care ? It's not like I liked Derek. And anyways, she just broke up with someone.
I walked towards the queue,my stomach grumbling. I grabbed a tray, a plate, a cup and cutlery. As I looked up, I noticed a dark haired girl staring at me. What was her problem ? She wouldn't quit leering at me. I decided to ignore her. I looked at the options for dinner. There were meatballs, lasagna, beef and veggies. I grabbed a plate of lasagna, a fruit and a can of coke. I decided to go for the nearest table. Three girls sat there, eating in silence.
"May I sit with you ?"I asked.
"Sure," one of the girls answered.
We all introduced ourselves. The girls were called Clarissa , Amanda and Vanessa. We chatted for a while, talking about our families,where we came from and what we were majoring in. Clarissa is the only child of the family, she is Japanese and she is majoring in English. Amanda has two brothers, she is American and she is majoring in science. Vanessa has a sister, she is British and she is majoring in music.
I had a great time until my roommate decided to show up.
"Stand up !"she yelled.
From the corner of my eye, I could see my new friends looking at my roommate in disapproval. Having nothing to loose, I decide to stand up. She came closer to me and I could feel her warm breath against my skin.
"Awww ! Someone has a little crush,"she said out loud, pouting.
I looked at her,confused. Then she pointed at Derek, a big smile posted on her face.
Tears started to form in my eyes. I rushed out of the cafeteria , as fast as my legs could take me. As I was about to take a turn, I bumped into someone. I looked up, and saw Derek looking at my red face, in confusion.

If you are confused at the end to how come Amber bumped into Dereck when he was supposedly supposed to be in the cafeteria you'll find out in the next chapter.
