She stays in bed till her alarm clock starts beeping, feeling doubtful about her whole plan.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!
As soon as time turns to 10:15 PM, she slams the off button and gets out of bed. She slings her backpack over her shoulder and ties her hair up into a messy bun. She checks her bag one last time before shutting her room door and walking downstairs.
A wave of sadness washes over her, she doesn't want to leave her aunt and uncle. Unlike her parents, they genuinely care about her and support her in everything.
She looks around the living room and smiles. The ornaments her aunt put up, pictures of the family from years ago brought back many memories.
She sighs then places a written letter she had prepared a day before on the mantle. Her aunt dusts the artifacts placed on top every other day.
She takes in a deep breath before smuggling herself out of the main door and walking down the cobblestone pathway. She has a long walk to the closest bus station, she plans to go as far as she can.
She needs some time to herself, some time to find her true identity. She can't depend on people anymore.
After forty-five minutes, she walks into the bus and sits somewhere in the middle, by the window. She enjoys looking at the passing scenery and nature rolling by.
An elderly woman approaches her, asking if she can sit next to her. The young girl nods her head and smiles.
"Where are you going?"
"New Mexico."
"All by yourself? How old are you?"
"Yeah, my um... parents are busy and I'm going to see my brother. I'm sixteen."
"Oh well stay safe, it's a long ride to New Mexico. I'm heading to Texas to meet my grandkids."
She smiles and nods her head, then frowns, "It must be nice having a family that loves you."
"Yes indeed. Doesn't your family love you?"
She stays silent, unsure about whether to lie or tell this stranger the truth. She doesn't know anything about her so wouldn't it be alright?
"Y-Yeah I... I guess they do."
