Sunday 31st December
New Year's Eve. By far the most dreaded day of the year. For most people, it was an evening of getting all dressed up, going to parties, getting drunk (even if it was under aged) and starting off the new year on a high (and for some of my friends that meant a literal high.)
For me however, that meant a night of movies and popcorn with my two best mates- Megan and Hannah. Despite all the invites to various parties we had been carelessly handed in the school hallways, there was no better way to end a good year than on a great note. For Meg and Han, party animals was an understatement. It took months of persuading to finally make them agree to stay in on the biggest party night of the year- in fact, I was really pleased with my persuasion efforts- which seemed to have worked! That didn't make this day any less horrible though. Everything just always felt so final on New Year's Eve. Everything you did, it would be the last time you did that this year. When actually, tomorrow would just be another normal day, but it would also happen to be January 1st.
I glanced over at the clock which read 7:45pm. Megan and Hannah would be here in 45 minutes. I decided to put on some light make up (and by that I meant mascara and some badly applied foundation) even though I was in my pyjamas, just to look like I made an effort.
Inevitably, 3/4 of an hour later, the doorbell rang. My mum and sister were out at their friends house, so thankfully I had the house all to myself. I opened the door to see Megan and Hannah standing on my doorstep in their little black dresses. "Guys you know when I said night in I meant like pyjamas and romantic movies right?"
"Can we come in? It's raining out here Freya."
I opened the door a little wider and moved down the hallway to make space for the girls.
"So... Why are you so dressed up?" I asked, my heart sinking at the sight of their full faces of make up and high heels next to my fluffy slippers and half effort mascara.
"Wait- you were serious when you said we would be staying in on New Year's?" Asked Hannah, a look of amusement and confusion on her face.
"Oh god, you were weren't you?" Answered Megan.
A look of guilt and embarrassment masked my usually happy face. How could I have actually believed that they would agree to staying in?
"Well what are we going to do now?" I asked, trying to rid my face from the look of pure disappointment.
"Well Connor's hosting a party at his house which - as you guys both know- is just down the road." Said Megan. Connor was Megan's boyfriend, who Hannah and I had met on countless occasions.
The look on my face obviously gave away how reluctant I was to go.
"Freya, look- there'll be some fit guys there for sure, and I haven't seen Alex in ages and this would be a great chance to see him." Alex was Hannah's boyfriend- and if he was going to be there, that meant I was going to be alone again. "And we also kinda already said yes." Finished Hannah.
"Guuuuyys. You know how much I hate going out. You guys go without me, I've got some stuff to catch up with anyway. It's all good." I whined
"Don't be ridiculous- you're coming with us. No argument- come on- let's go get ready." Megan said sternly.
"Fiiiinnneee." I whined as they urged me upstairs and into my roomHalf an hour later the girls had chosen out my cute little blue dress and done my make up quite nicely. I packed my little clutch bag, and while no one was watching, slipped my book into there as well, knowing I was going to end up at the end of the night on my own. At least I would be cuddled up in the wise words of Jane Eyre. So that was it- we were off down the road under our umbrellas in the pouring rain. I tried to look on the bright side and make the most of the night. so I made a half-hearted attempt to make a list of pros.
1. Maybe this would be a good start, in the new year I would get out more.
2. It would be a good chance to catch up with my friends from school since it was the Christmas holidays.
3. I might actually have fun (maybe)
4. If all else failed, Jane Eyre was right by my side.
