She stood there, heart stuck in her throat, deciding if she should swallow it down and continue walking ahead or spit it out and get noticed by them.
They were everywhere. Their stench and aura was a sign. A very bad sign.
It was raining, but it was a steady pour. Droplets of rain fell with fast murmurs of a noisy 'plop' on the the puddles. The sky was grey, and the shine of the sun setting was dimmed behind them as it made a dip on the peak of buildings.
Muttering a curse under her breath, Sky finally decided to stay strong. After all, she had been dealing with ghosts for years.
Taking slow steps, she gripped the umbrella handle tighter. But her kept pounding with every step she took.
She felt the stares--their stares--piercing through the back of her skull.
And that's where she broke into a run.
She had enough of it.
It has been... awhile since she felt like this. The stares, being alienated, being talked about behind her back, the betrayals--the traumatizing memories.
Shaking her head, Sky shoved those memories away. The brunette closed her umbrella, since it'll just slow her down with the gusts of wind incoming. She didn't care if she was wet or the people around had given her questioning looks as she ran. All she cared about was escaping the devourers after her, since they had caught up to her from what she saw when she turned her head to the side.
And what made her run even faster was the devourers combined and extended out streaks of black aura shape-shifting into arms reaching out for her.
By the time the black hands were on both sides of her head, she ducked as the arms enclosed together and forced her legs to dash forward, giving her more distance from the giant devourer.
-
All the running and dashing took a toll on her lungs as she slowed down for awhile when the devourer wasn't behind her. Sky had taken a couple of turns around the neighborhood and she was pretty sure she was lost for she didn't recognize this part of the neighborhood.
Taking in slow yet large breaths, she thought of a way to get away from the large devourer. But all of those broke away as soon as she smelled the familiar foul smell.
Sky broke into a ran again, heading towards where the road led her. But as she ran, it gradually became a downward slope and she can easily make out a dead end meters away.
Cursing once more, she shifted her eyes from side to side to look for another way--another escape. Luckily, she found a small entrance to an alley.
She entered it, but was a bit disheartened when the sight of the passageway being narrow and garbage bags and boxes serving as her obstacle. Not to mention the walls were rough and it looked like it could scratch her anytime. With the foul stench getting stronger, she had no time to complain and just made her way through the narrow passageway. She hurried, heart beating faster with fear.
But her skirt got hooked on a nail stuck on the cement wall for some reason.
"Little girl~ You think you could escape us?"
Sky could feel the pounding on her chest blood spreading to her ears. Her heartbeat louder than the annoying pitter-patter of the rain.
"Every soul has a scent, did you know?"
She panicked.
Will her soul get eaten like the others?
Will she die today?
Will she die without anyone knowing where she was?
Or even without anyone knowing she's dead?
Thoughts about death ran through her mind, and the horrible feeling of fear creeping up to her came back. But she had to stay strong. After all, it was those haunting memories that made her like what she is now.
"Where are you~?" The devourer sing-sang.
The voice made her snap out of her thoughts of dread. Knowing she had no time to figure out how to get herself unstuck, she gripped the part of her skirt that was near to the hooked part and pulled away, ripping the cloth off.
She began to ran, the rough walls scratching her wrists and her school uniform being dirtied. The narrow passageway had also twists and turns, it was a irritating, but she wasn't in the right place to complain about it.
With enough tolerance, she could see the exit ahead. She smiled, blue eyes shining bright in contrast with the dark alley way.
Filled with hope, she ran towards the exit.
