For most of her life, Hayden Gonzales lived in the shadow of her father's over protection, preventing her from pursuing who she feels she is meant to be.
Hayden's father, Robert Gonzales, is a high ranking S.H.I.E.L.D agent. His position often caused Hayden a lot of headaches.
It started with name calling, other male agents, particularly Brock Rumlow, underestimated her too much and called her princess, considered her a brat. Hayden was far from that. She had always wanted to stand up to Rumlow. For years, she tried to get on several dangerous missions to prove she's more than what other agents see her for.
Unfortunately, that plan often did not work, no matter how many times Hayden tried to exploit it. Her father would get in the way, expressing his worry for her, wanting her to be safe. That was something Hayden never understood.
She was a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, safe was not on the top of her vocabulary. She felt as though her father was hiding something, something he didn't want Hayden to know.
When a dangerous 0-8-4 threatens the lives of numerous agents--including a friend, Hayden doesn't hesitate to cone to the rescue.
People tried to stop her, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, her father--of course, even her best friend, who was the one in danger of being disintegrated into ashes.
Still, Hayden pushed on. She was sure this would be her winning moment, she was sure this was the mission she needed to do to be recognized for who she wants to be: a hero.
Unfortunately, she was wrong.
The ten-mile radius blast had killed anyone standing the nearest from it's source, and left the rest critically wounded.
Hayden was one of the furthest people who got hit with the wave, and her closest friend, David Haigh, had already been killed.
Hayden knew there wasn't a chance she could've saved him, but she was blinded. Blinded by her thrist for proving her strength, and blinded by her need to save her best friend.
This guilt was one of the horrible things the fatal accident had given her.
The rest were abilities that terrified even her, and the torment of having to live with the pain of people looking at you like you were a monster.
Since then, Hayden had been running, running from wanting to be a hero, running from every opportunity to prove herself.
Until the Avengers Intiative.
