Once we were alone, one of the interns asked me “Is she always like that?”

“Yes,” I said “always”

I turned away, looking out at the morning traffic moving slowly through the September morning mist. It would have been easier to feel sympathy for Pam if I didn’t know that act was purely for herself, a kind of ritual angry deceleration that she went through every time she lost a case. Not only did Pam disrupt my work, but she put me behind. In the morning that was particularly bad, because I did all my research then and I’m usually behind anyway.

I turned my back to the window and sat at my computer getting ready to start my new case. I opened a new word document and slowly typed my name, date and the case name: Esperanza Wilmiton, September 11, 2001 and Howard vs. Howard.  This case was really different, the family was from the Bronx and the dad wanted full custody of the child. You don’t really see that a lot, especially in New York. The only reason he had for him getting full custody was that the mother smoked. Smoking is a good reason because it cause damage to the kid but it wasn't enough, i mean you often have to have more than one reason to win the judge over.  I had to get more information so I called him.

“Hi Mr. Howard?”

“Yes. Is this Mrs. Wilmiton my lawyer?”

“Yes, I was wondering if you could come down to my office later this afternoon so I could get more information on your wife.”

“Yeah, I’m free at anytime but where is your office located?”

“It’s located in the South World Trade Center on the 52nd floor”

“OK. Um, is 6 OK?”

I looked at my schedule, nope i have to get a lie detector test results from some big shot detective , “Um what about 6:30 pm?”

“Yeah that’s fine.”

“Goodbye Mr. Howard”

“Goodbye Ms. Wilmiton”

My job has convinced me not to get married.  Some of the cases I see are terrible. If a guy ever asked me, I would say no i don't care how "in love" i was.

I looked at my clock it was already 8:30 and the sun was already up. Then I was interrupted by the sounds of horns honking.

“Oh god, it must be terrible to have your office New York traffic is terrible!” Pam said slipping back into my office.

“Hello Pam. Yes new York traffic is bad but an office is better than a cubicle, would you agree?” I said with a smirk growing on my lips. "Did you need anything?"

“I wouldn't know." I could see her pride dropping. "did you print out Stallman vs. state case?“

I looked at my clock again 8:31,oops, "I lost track of time”

“Can you print it out now”

“Wait I think it’s already printed out, it might be in the file room.”

“I’ll go check”

“I’ll go with you because I really need to get out of this office.”
