Melody walked along the paved roads of O'hkasis. She watched carefully at everyone who passed her to see if any resembled a girl with chestnut brown hair and green eyes. Melody noticed that they walked with pride, every stride held a reign of determination and their eyes didn't leave the route to their destination. Keeping with every step, she quickly made her way to what looked like an old run down bakery, overtaken by Father Time. A tea shop on the other side was overflowing with loyal customers.
Opening the cracked door, a small little bell rung and a girl about 15 looked up from the dusty wood counter she was cleaning with a rag that smelled of must. Her hair was an ombre of pink, purple and blue which was tied into a messy braid that fell down her shoulder. Her sharp purple eyes squinted at Melody.
"May I help you?" she asked, looking back down at the counter she was cleaning. A cat the color of midnight was stretching on one of the tables.
"I wanted to ask you a question. Have you seen a gi--" Melody was interrupted by a small little door that swung open next to the girl behind the counter, revealing an elderly lady with gray hair pulled into a tight bun stretching the skin on her face which was covered in wrinkles that time carved into her.
"Ezzie! Have you seen that new shop down the street? It's over taking us!" the lady exclaimed, not very pleased with the competition. The girl, Ezzie, frowned and looked at the elder, twisting her rag into a knot and placing it in a sink behind her.
"I'm not blind, Auntie. Of course it is, this shop is older than Lady Irene herself!" she countered at her aunt before turning back towards Melody, "Besides, we have a customer..."
The elder looked over at Melody, and her dark brown eyes widened as she scurried over and took her arm,
"Oh! Oh! I'm so sorry, take a seat, take a seat! Get cozy!" she said hurriedly as she sat Melody down on a chair as she uncomfortably shifted in it, getting a curious stare from Ezzie.
"Let me get you a cup of tea!" the woman said, stuttering over her words as she rushed out of the room and into the kitchen. Ezzie sighed as she opened a wooden cabinet, revealing shelves of cups and tea pots. She took a tea pot along with a cup and brushed the dust out, then placed it on the counter.
"I didn't catch your name," she said after a moment of silence. The black cat's yellow eyes caught Melody's light blue ones. He stared at her for minute before flicking his tail and walking back to Ezzie
"Oh, um, Melody..." she replied, hesitantly. Ezzie nodded before the elder once again barged into the room, holding a herb.
"EZZIE! I need the tea pot!" she exclaimed. Before Ezzie could get hold of the teapot, the elder reached forward and grabbed it, almost having it slipping from her grasp because of her shaking hands. She mumbled a 'thank you' before disappearing behind the door once again.
Ezzie looked at me, "I am sorry about my Aunt, she is so ecstatic when she has a new customer, we barely get any customers expect for that girl that passes through here time to time," she says. The cat then stared at Ezzie and she sneered at the cat. The cat bristles his fur and his claws were unsheathed. A flash of a blinding light followed. Before Melody could react a boy was staring at her with the same yellow eyes as the cat.
"U-uh...I know what Meif'wa are but...I didn't know that they could transform..." she said, breathless.
The boy had black hair that was ruffled to the side with matching black and white ears and a black tail with a white tip, swaying back and forth.
"Well, I'm a special Meif'wa then," he says back, his voice surprisingly cold. Ezzie rolled her eyes which were full of hatred. Melody observed the behavior and decided that something happened between these two. The elder barged in, disrupting the silence that filled the room that was making her uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry for the wait," she said setting a pot of tea along with a cup onto Melody's table. She poured the tea into the cup and when she finished she noticed the Meif'wa boy and frowned.
"Lance, I thought I told you to stay as a cat when there's customers here.." the elder said calmly, but her voice steady and stern. Lance rolled his eyes and crossed his legs on the counter getting a dirty look from Ezzie who just cleaned the counter.
"Eh, I was getting tired," he said innocently.
"Auntie Rose, seriously, we took in this scum for 3 weeks and he has been treating us like trash.." Ezzie spat. Rose looked from Ezzie to Lance who were both trading dirty looks. Melody nervously sipped at her tea, hoping not to get into the personal problem.
Rose sighed, "Fine. Lance, you have one more week here until you have to return to your own, we can't take care of you, let alone ourselves. And it also seems my niece hasn't taken a liking to you.." her voice was full of regret, but she sounded as if she was making the right choice.
Lance frowned and stayed quiet. After a few moments of this he got up and walked out, slamming the door behind him. I flinched at the loud noise, Ezzie smiled a bit and Rose turned around to look at me with an apologizing look.
"I'm sorry about that, would you like anything else?" she asked, sitting across from me. I smiled a little at her and replied,
"Actually...I wanted to know if you knew someone that looks like me, but with green eyes..?" the cup seemed cold against her trembling hands as Rose thought, her eyes shining.
"I do...she comes by here sometimes...I don't know anything personal about her...maybe you should ask Ezzie..."
Before Melody could ask anything else she scurried out of the room, back into the sanctuary of the kitchen.
"That's Auntie. She's not good with the pressure of questions....any ways..what can I do for you?" she asks, leaning on the counter as if that Lance boy didn't stomp out earlier.
"I was wondering if you knew the name of that girl that comes here often..."
"I do." Perfect.
"Um...can you tell me her name?"
"I can't just give out personal information to anyone.." she replied sternly.
"Please? I'm trying to find someone important to me..." she put on the best innocent face she could, staring into her eyes. Ezzie's cold eyes made her feel uncomfortable as she held her gaze, but Ezzie finally broke with a sigh.
"Fine. Her name is Destiny. Don't know where the girl lives, she's a quiet one and likes to keep to herself," she chuckles a bit, "because if she spoke the queen would have her tongue cut off..."
Well, dark humor there.
"That's all I needed to ask..." she said, downing her tea in one gulp, standing up and putting a few silver coins on the table with one swift motion.
As she started to walked to the door she stopped and turned her head over her shoulder a little bit so she could catch Ezzie's attention.
"Also...what happened between you and that Lance character?"
Ezzie frowned darkly, turning back to the sink, playing with the faucet.
"Nothing happened between Lance and I. You see, O'Kasis doesn't take kindly to Meif'wa. If they caught Auntie Rose and I hiding a Meif'wa under their noses it will cost us our heads. We have had close calls. It's sad O'Kasis doesn't take a liking to those cat people..."
Melody nodded a little bit, heading for the door once again, but what Ezzie said next stopped her cold in her tracks and sent a shiver going down her spine.
"And they don't like little mages like you roaming around their kingdom either..."
