Concert 2
Chapter 10: The Aftertaste
Bill arrives at the theatre Mikah instructed him to meet her, the Showplace on Western and Logan in front of the Burger King. His driver, a local man, had found the place easily commenting on its multiple name change over the last year. He asked the driver about the movies showing.
“There are a few that came out last week like Fright Night and a sappy one with Anne Hathaway,” the driver told him. “And there is Captain America, came out 3 or four weeks ago.”
He searched the titles on his phone as they waited for Mikah to arrive. The driver was a pleasant enough to talk to, his voice deep reminding Bill of his father’s. Fright Night sounded familiar to him, and upon searching the title; he decided it was that movie they would see. He asked the driver if he could purchase two tickets for Fright Night in 3D while he called Mikah. Smiling kindly, the driver nodded and got out of the car.
Following him out of the car, Bill pulled his hood over his head and looked around. No one would recognize him, no had so far, but it never hurt to be careful. He followed the driver to the large window doors and into the ticket booth. He remained by the doors however, after giving his credit card to the man, and looked out to the street.
A bus passed going downtown, another going the opposite way. His eyes glazed as he daydreamed in remembrance of Germany. The busses were never synchronized, not as orderly as these seemed. A hand landed on his shoulder and he turned.
“There you go, two for Fright Night in 3D.” He was handed his credit card and the tickets. “Do want me to wait with you?”
“You don’t have to,” Bill told him. “Do you want to see a movie? It must be a bore to sit in a car until I come out.”
“That’s very nice of you,” the man smiled. “I would love to.”
“Here, buy a ticket for whatever movie you wish.” Bill hands him his card once more with a smile. A natural smile, not a ‘smile for the camera’ smile. The man takes the card looking at him in the eye before turning. “Wait.” The man turns; his shoulders slumped, as returns to Bill’s side. Bill looks at him, confused. “I was just going to ask for your name.”
“I-its John.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Bill tells him honestly.
“You too.”
Ten minutes before the movie was scheduled to begin, Mikah arrives. He sees her even before she gets out of the car, a friend dropping her off. He smiles as she gets out and walks to the theatre. Opening the door for her, he steps outside letting her enter first. She smiles at him and waits for him to walk on. John is waiting by the doors to the actual theatre with his card. As they walk to the doors, John hands him the card and opens the door for them.
“What movie are we going to see?” She asks.
“Well...” Bill takes out the tickets and hands her one.
“Oh my god!” she says happily. “I’ve wanted to see this movie for days now.”
They go to get food stands and wait in line to order. He feels apprehension over what to order. The choices go beyond anything he’s ever seen. Large popcorn with large drink, large popcorn with two medium drinks, two small popcorns with a large drink... and so on. He doesn’t know what to order. If he orders a single bag and drink, would she share with him?
Luckily for him, she takes the lead and steps up when it’s their turn to order. He follows her, nodding when she asks him if diet coke is all right. He pays and can’t help but smile at her selection, large popcorn and a single large coke. John winks at him as they leave the counter. Bill smiles, and notes that he’s been doing that a lot lately. No, only around Mikah does he smile sincerely.
They go to theatre five, Bill following Mikah at she choose their seating location. If felt nice not being the leader, not having to make the decisions but liking the outcome nonetheless. She seemed to pick everything he would’ve if he had the choice. It seemed like they worked on the same tune, the same dial on the radio. It was rather invigorating.
They spoke while the previews played, one or two catching Mikah’s attention. She talked of coming back for this movie or that one, her eyes begging him to say yes. He did. God, he hoped they’d be together come November when the movie came out. It was early October, the leaves still comfortably on their perch on the trees. November seemed long ways away.
Eventually he found himself drowning in her voice, she was a chatterbox. Not that he minded of course. He liked watching her mouth move and form words. The way her mouth curved when she smiled or the way her lip seemed to tease him when she said his name. He took it all in stride and made comments that made her laugh a rich laugh that crinkled the corner of her eyes as she attempted not to laugh too hard.
All in all, he could say that, even in the small span before the movie began, that he was falling in love. He turned to her one last time as the lights dimmed and the movie began. He looked at her, truly. She was magnificent, beautiful in her own way and her personality similar to his. If was as if they were made for one another. And there in that dark room, he wished with all his heart that she might feel the same way. As he turned to the movie, he could’ve sworn he saw a smile take hold of her lips before relaxing as the title made its way across the screen.
Fright Night
*I'll upload again tonight with "the date" or whatever i end up calling it. I promise i won't include spoilers for that awesome movie with the very sexy Colin Farrell, who by the way is Mikah's father in my mind. I don't know why... he just is.*
