Hope

“AIEEE!” I yelped, as I was launched out of my bed, chestnut hair falling into my crystal blue eyes, making them itch as I stared at the reason why I was out of my wooden bed, thin blanket and my imagination.
“I told ya, Bob, if ya not up by Sunrise, ya gonna be sorry.”
I groaned inwardly at the brunette girl in front of me. “Tabo.....not again......”
“Up and out! And Tabo, it really wasn't necessary to jump on poor Anna, you bad dog!”
It was Bobo, tall, slightly tanned with dark hair, who came to the rescue, and they started a mock-argument.
For the – what was it now? - fifty fourth millionth six thousandth and twelfth time - not that I was counting - I wondered why Bobo called Tabo a dog, or why Tabo called me Bob. It was a puzzle that I had learned to live with.
In a little daydream, I hadn't noticed Mari coming up behind me.
“Ha! Gotcha!” The little blonde crowed with delight at our little game of 'Wathoe', where we would grab the by the neck until they said the right word.
“Wathoe,” I murmured calmly. It was always Mari's  word.
      She let go.
“My turn to get you next,” I began, because I always got the other person quick, but Bobo cut me off. She must have finished arguing with Tabo.
“Mazzy wants to see you two. And Aloe as well.”
“She's not awake yet,” Mari stated.
“She is now. Cheese cubes!” I called quickly.
A small girl with long brown hair bounded up, looking excited. She held her hand out with a pleading expression on her face.
"Sorry," I apologized, and when she realized there weren't any, her face fell.
"Stop talking and get moving! Mazzy wants to see you three!" Bobo screwed her face up as she glowered at us.
"Hmmm, anyone know when Alexis is back?" Mari asked innocently, turning to me and motioning a halo above her head, and wings on her back. As I opened my mouth to answer that she should be back this morning, when a voice came from behind me.
"I'm here now."
I swear, I jumped half a mile in the air.
"Alexis, don't do that!" As she looked on with a smile on her face, I rounded on Mari.
"You knew!" I accused, but I couldn't help laughing with everyone else.
"Your face!" The curly haired brunette with slanted eyes that stood behind me sniggered.
We walked out of the door and sauntered to Mazzy's tent. I spotted a boy that was crying slightly on the way, but Mari and Aloe were on either side of me and dragged me along. I managed to flash an piteous glance at him over my shoulder, although I don't think he saw it. I hoped I could comfort him later. I must have stopped for a second because Alexis pushed me from behind.

Mazzy was tall, taller than  Bobo, with silky brown hair down to the small of her back. Why were brunettes so common? Mazzy ushered us inside and, suprisingly, didn't ask about Alexis' mission. I suspected that she had already come to report.
Mazzy turned around with a small package. Opening it, she quickly shared out a thin slice of cheese. It must have been from Alexis'  recent expedition. I ate my portion slowly, savouring the taste.
Mazzy was quick to the point.
"We need someone to explore enemy territory. Crete," She added when we looked excited.
 "Anyone?" She seemed passive.
I glanced around at the others and slowly raised my hand.
Alexis rolled her eyes at the expressions on everyone's faces and stood up. "I'll go with her," She said.
Mazzy knew that no one else would volunteer, so she pushed us out and pointed to the dock.
"Yours is the big one," She said.
We looked at each other. We were not going to have a comfortable journey, because, although we were friends, we argued. A lot.
"Race you!" I shouted and ran full pelt towards the dock. I felt a cool breeze and watched as Alexis' long legs took her further and faster than me.
I grabbed her by one arm, pulled her back, and collapsed on the dark, wooden deck ahead of her, panting and sweating.

It took several days to get to Crete, and it was incredibly boring. All I could do was draw seagulls, clouds and the sea, and I was sick of it. There was no point in describing most of it, since it was the same.
Wake up on a coil of ropes as the ship lurched in the deep, cerulean blue sea. Eat some dried, tough meat for breakfast and drink a small bit of salt water. Feel sick if it was rough, nd if not, be bored all day until sunset, where we had some more of the meat before sleeping, in our only clothes, on the same coils of rope.

Crete was an empty island, thanks to the monsters. There was  maze of cobbled streets and roads before we saw it.
There were no guards at the stronghold, they never thought that anyone would dare to try. We did.
We walked in together, but we split up when we got inside. I took the left fork.
I walked for a long time, my footfalls echoing painfully in my ears, before I walked out into a courtyard. I didn't get the chance to see any more before a veiled woman approached me.
"Medusa!" I snarled.
She laughed, hissess entangled in the sound.
"Sssssso, it ssssssseemsssss that my legendsssss are not forgotten." She produced a whip from behind her back.
"Tell me what you know," she said pleasantly.
"No," I cried out as the whip was used with lightning speed. Steel tips, the pain was easy to tell it's story.
“Tell us where the Resistance is based! Or do you want another taste of the whip, girl?”
“Never! The Resistance is strong and will defeat your armies! You'll never win!”
The crack of the whip could be heard across the dirty, partially demolished courtyard, as could my strangled cries of agony.
“TELL ME!” Her face exploded in a fiery blast of heat, singeing a few fringe hairs, and I could hear a slithery hiss near my face.
I imagined her looking in the mirror, which made me feel elated inside, but my eyes forced themselves open soon enough. A cold, tingly feeling spread throughout my body. All I could to do, unmoving, was think. I thought of how the war would end soon, my friends on the winning side. That Alexis had gotten out, unharmed or otherwise, if at all. With those hopes in my head, I was frozen forever.
