Kirby shoved Strippin off of her for the third time that night.
They were in their small, square room that they had dug out of the side of the mountain a few days ago. It was devoid of any character, the only things accompanying their sleeping bags were a furnace to keep them warm and crafting bench. They slept next to each other because there wasn't enough room to spread out, but Strippin seemed to like Kirby's shoulder more than the pillow in his sleeping bag, and though she was afraid to wake him the first night, the crick in her neck from having to keep still was enough for her to push him off the second.
She rolled over, the blade of her shoulder digging painfully into the hard ground. She was miserable. She couldn't remember what being in a warm bed felt like and, combined with sleeping on the hard stone floor, her body ached from the constant running, climbing, and dragging meat back to their camp. At least they would be bringing back food for everyone, and Kirby hoped that Hannah and Duncan would have figured out why the farms were doing so bad by the time they came back.
And she needed space from Ross and Sjin.
Kirby knew what she had done was wrong, but the feeling of Ross' lips on her skin had kept her going through this entire hunting trip. She couldn't believe how badly she wanted him, and the fights with Sjin only proved further that she didn't belong with the farmer anymore.
She cursed herself for letting Sjin enter her thoughts. Memories of the farm and how happy they were came flooding in. Sometimes she wished he had never decided to leave it; she would have never known Ross was alive and Kirby wouldn't be feeling such torment over choosing one of them. She felt like she didn't even know who Sjin was anymore; the stress of Cornerstone had changed him.
She didn't realize she was crying until Strippin was sitting up and shaking her. "Hey, Kirby, are you okay? What's wrong?" he asked, leaning over her to try and get a glimpse of her face.
Kirby sat up as well, angrily wiping the bitter tears away. She couldn't let people know that she was so emotional over this all, they would never take her seriously if they thought she was just some emotional little girl. "Sorry, I must have been having a nightmare," she said absently, waving the hand on her shoulder away, "I didn't mean to wake you."
"It's okay, do you want to talk about it?" he asked kindly, pulling at Kirby's shoulder to get her to face him, "Was it about Sjin and Ross?"
Kirby had been friendly with Strippin before Sjin had brought them all together, but they had been growing closer throughout the week and this hunting trip only solidified their friendship. She felt like she could trust him enough to talk about what she was feeling, but she still felt like he would judge her poorly for being so self centered and self absorbed. "I'm just a little stressed," she said, giving a breathy laugh. She could just see the Rail Bro's eyes through the square of moonlight that came through the door's window, since they snuffed out all the torches at night to avoid detection.
"I'm going to go get a drink," he said, standing and offering his hand before even asking, "Would you come give me some back up?"
"Sure," she smiled, feeling herself calm down. Kirby figured she was just over tired and it was making her blow everything out of proportions. She pulled on her jacket to preserve what little warmth she could before strapping her sword across her back. Normally she kept a short sword at her hip, but she had chosen to bring a two handed broad sword on their trip instead; it was bulky and she couldn't fight with it, but it made killing animals easier and cleaner.
They both stuck their heads out of the doorway and made a quick sweep for zombies hiding in the shadow of the cliff or spiders crawling above them, but there was no threats around. Tonight was the full moon, so it was easy for Kirby and Strippin to make their way down the hill and towards the river.
