Unpaid Drugs

Michael
Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden.
-Phaedrus
PERFORMING IS AN ENORMOUS RUSH FOR ME even if we aren't as big as we expected to be by now. Adrenaline would course through my veins in every set and I felt most alive when I was on stage. It was a high even drugs couldn't fulfill, and everything about performing was intoxicating-- in a good way. We always poured our hearts and souls into each performance even if it was for a couple of people. Tonight was a bit different since we hadn't performed in over two weeks, and I felt a bit jittery as well as the rest of the lads. A new song was going to be played tonight and this could either have our fan base grow or shrink, which was nerve wrecking to even think about.
"Michael, we're on in one!" Luke shouted, jumping around with his guitar flopping all over the place. He was always very eager to get out and perform, always thinking of his mom when he did it. He wanted nothing more than to make it big and make his mother happier than ever. If this band failed, he'd regret lying for the rest of his life and resent us, so he tried his hardest out there. He was always the most energetic out there anyways, so there was no way we couldn't make it without Luke.
I let go of the breath I was holding in, walking out of the dressing room and grabbing my guitar from Ashton's hand. We all began to line up by the curtains while the owner of the cafe talked to the crowd, telling some jokes and what not. Luke went first, then Calum, Ashton, and me.
"The crowd looks bigger tonight," Ashton sighed, running a hang through his messy hair. He was mainly the annoying one because he'd always bring up career ending stories like if he'd accidentally let go on his drum sticks and hit someone in the crowd with hit. He was the most melodramatic out of all of us, which is odd because I always thought it'd be Luke. "Guys don't forget the new song, it's right after over and over." This was about the millionth time he reminded us today.
"We know Ash," Calum rolled his eyes, gripping onto the neck of his bass. He was usually the one that most annoyed with all of us and our silly reactions to performing. Cal was either never nervous or was just good at hiding his expressions. Most of the times he would tell us to shut up and play it cool but deep down I think we would freak him out.
"Ashton, we know, quit freaking us out," I groaned, hoping the minute was almost up. He rolled his hazel eyes at me, looking back out at the crowd. It didn't take long before a guy shouted to go out and we all began running to our positions. Luke was always in the middle because he was most of our vocals, Calum stood on the left and I stood on the right. Obviously Ashton had to park it behind us because of the drums, and that was mainly the reason I was beginning to go deaf. The lad can sure play those drums.
"Hello!" Luke shouted in the microphone while adjusting his guitar. "I'm Luke!" Immediately we began gaining the interest of horny little teenage girls. Luke didn't know this, but a lot of the girls always ask about him, yet he hasn't gotten one single girl because we all lie and say he's gay.
"I'm Calum!"
"I'm Ashton!"
"And I'm Michael."
"We are 5 Seconds of Summer, and this first song is called Out Of My Limit!"
The first few notes of the song flowed through me smoothly and I knew that this gig was going to be one hell of a gig.
