Katie couldn't recollect a time when she ran faster then she was right this moment. Her heart was beating so frantically that she was certain it would spring from her chest. All she knew was that her life was in danger, and that was all that seemed to matter in these few short moments. Her face was burning from being struck by branch after branch, and her legs were victim to the briars that inhabited the forest floor. There was but a split second that she wished she had worn something longer than the shorts she had on, but it was a bit too late to think about anything of the sort. She flashed a glance over her shoulder to try and get a peek at her perusers to see how much ground there was between her and the two of them. It wasn't much help though. All that could be seen was fragments of moonlight being cut apart by the leaves on the trees, illuminating their silhouettes in the dark. Her blonde hair was drenched in sweat and was sticking to her face. The hoodie she wore was trapping all her body heat and was making it difficult for her to continue her flee. It was then that the plan was conceived into her mind. Her father had walked out on her at a young age so she had only her mother and her aunt to bring her up. Tears began to form in her eyes. Her mom died a victim of cancer at age 53 and she fought for 13 years. Just like her mother, she didn't have a choice. Fighting was her only option. Katie turned around suddenly to view the two figures that rushed toward her. They were in black jumpsuits, white masks, and they both seemed to be unarmed. Her natural instinct came to her. The eyes of the masks that they wore blocked their peripheral vision, so if she somehow got out of their line of vision they were helpless. So with all of her courage built up as much as it could be built, she sped in her foes direction. And before they met in the middle she dived into the air and threw herself at their knees, she was hoping to break at least one of their legs. All three of them fell to the ground, but Katie was the first one up. She had the advantage and she knew what she was gonna do with it. One of the perusers were on their feet only seconds after Katie had stood up. Katie closed only the second bend in her fingers and struck her victim in the ribs with the palm of her hand. She felt ribs crack beneath her force and immediately pushed the first foe aside. He struck the ground with a sharp intake of air, gasping for breath. She looked to see that his accomplice was on all fours trying to shake off the fall, but Katie didn't give him a chance to stand. She took her foot and gave him one blow to the face. The nose of the mask flattened and he was flung in the air before landing on his back. Now that she had the chance, she took off her hoodie and was on the run again, but this time she had a good two minute head start. Katie's head was overwhelmed with many questions such as, "What do they want with me?" And "Will I ever see my aunt again?" The air rushed over her body while she ran and she was thanking God that is was cold air. Trees were passing her and each time she passed one the scent of sap filled her nostrils. But just before her heart rate had time to calm down she heard the stomps of boots on pine needles and leaves. Up ahead Katie spotted a pair of head lights passing by. A road. She pushed and made her thin legs run as fast as they could. She was just yards away from the road and she could taste the security ahead. She would be safe. But all of the sudden she heard a distant click and without thinking she kept running though the footfalls behind her seized. Boom! The sound erupted into the air. That was when she felt the sharp pain in her back. She placed her hand upon the newly created hole in her skin and felt the warm liquid staining her tank top. She didn't know what hurt more; the bullet in her back or the fact that she felt as if she'd failed her mother. She fell to her stomach and began to crawl, though she knew it was probably pathetic to even try anymore. Suddenly she felt the hands of one of the men roll her over. This was her final chance to get out of this alive. She squirmed and moved her body about, but the man in the white mask had enough of her rebellious ways. He struck her in the face with his fist, and her fight was over. The man heaved Katie over his shoulder and carried her back into the dark of the night.
