Dante sat slumped in his chair along with the rest of the class. Well, at least the ones that weren't asleep. 3rd period biology was a major drag for Dante. What a way to start out a 17th birthday. He was happy he had to admit, exited even but the loss of his babysitter and best friend was still weighing down on his conscious. It wasn't that he needed closure. He didn't know and didn't ever want to know for that matter, but maybe if he'd gotten to see her before she died he could have moved on. Dante glanced at the clock on the wall. He had about 20 more minutes to spend listening to Mrs. Henson ramble on about the difference between homozygous and heterozygous genes; her hair resembled that of Mrs. Frizzle from The Magic Schoolbus. Someone across the room caught Dante's attention. Snow was on the opposite side of the room but was on the back row, same as Dante. Dante looked over at Snow without having to look past anyone, the back of the room was almost abandoned except for the company of the two. Snow was balancing a lead pencil between her upper lip and nose, her eyes were crossed and she imitated a frown. Dante covered his mouth and nose to muffle up his chuckle. He knew he and Snow were bound to get in trouble with their childish game but Dante didn't care. It was his birthday and he was gonna make it fun while it lasted. Dante reached into the front pouch of his book bag and took another wooden pencil to match the one he had in his hand. Dante turned away from Snow momentarily to hide his mischief. He took the two pencils and tucked them under his upper lip, eraser first. Though it didn't taste too pleasant it was gonna be totally worth it to see the face Snow would make. He turned back to Snow, trying to keep a straight face. Snow fought to keep her composure, and she was successful. Dante knew he would have to up the anti. He crossed his eyes, and held his arms out in front of him T-Rex style then started chewing on an invisible substance. This was enough to make both of them kiddie snicker. A blonde haired girl that sat two seats in front of Dante whirled her head around to see what the commotion was about. Once she seen Dante's ridiculous fashion she scoffed and angrily slouched in her desk. By now both of them we're losing it until Dante was called out by Mrs. Henson. "Dante," the pencils dropped from his mouth. "Would you like to add any other statement as to why homozygous and heterozygous genes are different. Dante's face reddened, "No Ma'am." The teacher recoiled. "Very good. Now if there is no further intrusions..." And continued her lesson. Dante looked back over at Snow. She was smiling but wasn't laughing anymore. Dante then noticed another reason why he chose Snow to be his bassist. She probably was the brightest soul in the band. She brought the most smiles, and most happiness." Suddenly the school bell sounded off. Time for lunch. Dante walked towards the doorway, leaned against the door jam, letting his other classmates pass by, and waited on Snow.
Dante walked beside Snow on the way to the lunch room, his own home lunch in his hand (ham and cheese sandwich and a small bag of chips). Dante and Snow had a silly tradition. Snow always stole chips from his lunch bag and dropped at least one of them. So since it happened the first few times she started doing it on purpose. It was a connection that only they had. Snow smiled warmly, "So how's life?" Dante was silent for several moments, before answering. He was gazing at the framed pictures of inspirational quotes that hung on the walls all over the school. He would occasionally stop and read a few if he was called to the office or something like that, but he was pretty sure Snow wouldn't want to wait up on him so he stuck by her side. "Pretty good. What about you?" Said Dante looking from one of the pictures to her. Snow met his gaze with innocence in her eyes. "Life is... Well I'm alive aren't I?that's what matters most." Dante walked Snow through the line to get her own food. Their conversation deepened and then they walked side by side to the commons area, in a corner where the whole group sat beside the stairs. Ivy, and Vesta we're sitting beside one another, having their own little conversation and Daemion was sitting by them. He looked lonesome. He had his tray in his lap and was quietly chewing on his fries. Vesta just so happened to look up and see Dante walking their way. Ivy's eyes trailed off in his general direction before seeing him and Snow. Ivy jumped up and ran to Dante with her arms open. Dante wrapped his arms around her in a tight embrace before finding his seat beside Daemion. "What's up kid?" Daemion looked up from his fries. "Oh, what's up cuz? So check this out. You know that place beside the Drive through? The Haunted Attic?" Dante was well aware of the presence of that horrible place. "Yeah, why..?" Daemion pulled out a fat roll of cash and said, "I got paid last night and I hope you don't have plans tonight because we're all going. I already talked it over with aunt Caroline. She just said to keep you out of trouble." Dante was stuck. He swore he would never go to this place. He promised himself, his future children, and whatever God was out there that he would never step foot in The Haunted Attic. But yet here he was having no choice. He mentally cursed himself for the decision he was about to make. Dante flashed a plastic smile, "Can't wait."
