The next morning Dante woke up earlier than he usually would on a weekend. The sun shining through his blinds was the culprit of that crime he was guessing. His room wasn't very big at all, including only a twin-bed, a dresser, and a desk in which he spent many hours writing his music. His walls, which he painted himself, were white but he had etched weeping willows across their every surface. Dante was very talented in the visual as well as the auditory arts. Though music was his first job, drawing tattoo stencils or painting was his hobby. He reached over to his phone on his nightstand to check the time and pressed a button on the side. As he did the screen lit up and shown the picture of a girl with red hair, green eyes, and freckles dotted about her cheeks. Her dimples somehow made the picture more alive. Dante smiled at the thought of just her in general. This young lady in the picture was Dante's girlfriend of two years Ivy. They had met in the seventh grade, and had claimed each other as brother and sister for a year. Which this was just a way of covering up how they truly felt. In truth they were head over hills for each other and Dante finally had the courage to ask her out at 14 years old. Dante was totally convinced that she was the best thing for him in this point of his life. Suddenly His stomach grumbled it's disagreement. Maybe at the moment food would be the best thing for him. As Dante lazily lifted himself out of bed his muscles screamed and his bones creaked in every joint. He smiled though, as he replayed the conversation he and Ivy had last night in his head. He had memorized the most important parts of it and locked it inside his head. Dante shuffled across his bed room in nothing but his favorite Get Scared sweats, and crossed the threshold from his room to the upstairs hall. He passed by the bathroom and sluggishly sauntered down stairs, contemplating what he would eat to sooth his morning hunger. He was thinking about the bacon and egg sandwich that was left over from yesterday morning, but when he stepped into the kitchen the plate was sitting on the counter beside the sink. Someone had already gotten to it before he could. Dante looked over to see someone's behind poking out from behind the open fridge door. The figure withdrew their head from the fridge, holding a half empty jar of mayo in one hand, then closed the fridge with the other hand.
It took him a second but he finally realized the posture in which this person was standing. It had to be his brother. "Sage." Sage turned around startled, accidentally tipping the plate. When it collided with the marble floor, shards of glass, bacon, and eggs littered the floor. Sage eyed Dante and stepped over the hazard and pulled Dante into a strong embrace and held him there for what seemed like forever before letting him go. Sage had moved about a month ago to live with their grandparents in which both were very old and couldn't do for themselves anymore. He was willing to be their caretakers until they died. Sage cursed under his breath and started picking up the bits of what was once a plate, "didn't mean to make a mess man you just scared the shit out of me." Dante bent down and cupped his hand then started helping clean up the mess, "nah bro it's cool. I'm just glad you're here." Sage smiled and took what food and plate bits Dante held as well as what he held in his hand and threw it away. Dante crossed his arms, "why didn't you call before you came over?" "I did last night but all I got was the answering machine. Guess I shouldn't have called so late," said Sage leaning back against the counter. "How's the band?" Asked Sage a bit off. Dante could tell that Sage's game was way off. He seemed distant in a way that made Dante anxious. Dante answered Sage's question with a smile. It wasn't a genuine smile, but it was something to cover up his anxious thoughts. "It's going. I have faith. So does the rest of the group." Sage shifted his weight. "That's great man. It's always good to have faith. Keep it strong and use it. You'll become someone someday, unlike our father. Dante chuckled at the pun. Dante nor Sage knew who their father was. So to say their father was nobody would be legitimate. Sadly as it was the two of them were the product of rape. Dante often wondered how his mother could look him in the eye, or better yet why didn't she get an abortion. He'd asked her one time and she'd only said that they couldn't help what had happened. That they deserved life more than the monster who'd brought them along. "By the way," said Sage. "You guys don't have any teabags. I seen that there wasn't any tea but when I went to make some I noticed there weren't any teabags either. Tea was a huge thing in Dante's family. Tea was like coffee to them. No tea, no peace. "Guess I'll go by the drive through and get some." Said Dante as he walked past Sage then snatched his bike keys from their hanger. "Umm. It should take me no longer than twenty minutes to go to town and back so." Dante paused and stretched before pointing to the television remote in the front room. "Watch t.v., Read, I dunno just keep yourself occupied until mom gets up." Dante slipped on his red and black Chucks along with his red and black striped hoodie and left out.Dante rode into town on his motorcycle. Burnt Chimney was no bigger than Gaffney, maybe a little smaller. History of this town was deeper than the name. Burnt Chimney didn't always have the trademark name of Burnt Chimney. Like all proud towns, it had a history. Not really interesting to Dante, but interesting to the tourists that love to see it's "Beautiful Sights." In the 1940's the town Mystic Forest stood where Burnt Chimney does now. The town was known for it's beautiful flourishing trees and shrubbery. The town had forests for miles, the town itself was located in one of most flamboyancy. In the summer lightening bugs lit up the air like Christmas in July. And in the winter when it snowed ice sickles made the tree branches glisten but at the same time weighed them down and made them droop. But there came a day that changed the town of Mystic Forest forever. Story tells that a few careless teens had started a fire that night while they drank, smoked and did all of the things that teens do. They left that same night because one of them had spotted a bear. The whole group was in a stir and scared so bad they had neglected to put out the fire. Unfortunately the fire went wild and burned down the whole forest including the town. Luckily the towns people had evacuated in time and the fire was soon stopped. When they came back to reclaim their scorched belongings it was said that all that was left standing was a Burnt Chimney. There was a mile of trees that had been spared, which later had a road paved in between them. It made a beautiful hallway scene and it is what the town is most known for now since they covered them in Christmas lights. The lights stay on the trees all year round. It was just easier to leave them there than to have to put them on the trees in on November 30th, just to take them back off on the first day of the next year. But since then most of the forestry has been cut down to make room for a hospital, grocery store, movie theater, and schools. Dante had finally arrived at The Drive Through, which was located between the towns only teen club and movie theater. It was called The Drive Through for obvious reasons. You couldn't go in and get what you wanted. You had to wait in line at a drive through to get what you wanted. It was fortunate for the stock industry of the town since it eliminated the possibility of a sly thief, but unfortunately The Drive Through was still skeptical to drive through robberies. The teen club to the left was called The Haunted Attic. This was the place to go for drinking, daughters of angry fathers getting knocked up, and it was also the place known for the most fights. All of reasons Dante never went there for no reason at all. To the right was The Golden Cinema, the towns only movie theater. It was pretty much the same deal only you could do all the things you could do at The Haunted Attic, with a complimentary rated R movie to watch.
On the way back home, Dante took a shorter route home which was along the borderline of The Brickyards. In every Movie there was a place in the setting that nobody went except those who were insane or those with a death wish. If Dante's life was a movie, the Brickyards would be that place. Dante stopped his bike and cut the engine before looking beyond the railroad tracks on the other side of the chain link fence, bordering safety and endangerment. This was the place of pure evil, but ironically the grass was literally greener on the other side. Murder, suicide, lynching, rape, and Satanic rituals all took place on the grounds of the Brickyards. Sometimes more than one at a time. Dante had never seen as far as what he could see from the fence and never dreamed of a time in which he had wanted to. Dante simply started his bike back up and continued home.
