Broken Bird

Chapter 4

I stopped struggling. 'N-Nick?" i said, stunned for a second. "Yeah, who'd you think it was?" he said. "Oh I don't know, a monster!" i screeched. I remembered we where flying and got nervous "Uh, How are we flying?" i asked, scared of being stuck in a chopper. " Oh, I probably should have told you, but i was scared." he said looking away from me. That's when I saw his wings. They where jet black and as long as mine. "wha-" I was stunned. I never told him about my wings either, we kept them from each other. "Let me go, your not the only one with secrets." i said.

He let go of me and I let myself drop a few yards before extending my wings fully. The red on the tips of the feathers made my wings look blood stained. Nicks eyes where wide. "Woah! how come you never told me?" Nick went to Hearth with me and turned out to be my brother, yet i never told him about my wings. "I-I was scared." i said looking down. " you look like an angel that was dipped in blood." he said.

"Hey Ari! We could use some help down here!" Tim yelled up to me. "Well, duty calls" I said and folded my wings. As i was falling to the ground i could see that we where clearly outnumbered. Tim was fighting a swarm of the scaly mutants, and Chase and Amber where working together to beat off another swarm.

I snapped out my wings just before I landed on a snake woman in Tim's swarm. It felt good to fight again. Nick dropped next to me and started fighting, wing to wing with me. We fought for a while, punching, round kicking, anything to keep them away. One the fight was done Tim seemed to notice Nick and turn on him.

"Who are you!" he yelled at Nick. I stepped in front of nick on impulse "he's my brother." I said to Tim. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pop up out of no where. I was checking on something nearby and heard the slitherwings and came to check on it and found Aria." Nick said, pushing me aside. Tim was still on alert but seemed to relax a bit. "Alright then." Chase ran the perimeter and confirmed that more teachers where on their way to find us and that we should probably leave.

"I know a safe house not far from here. We should be safe there." Nick said. We where all tired, especially Amber. I looked over everyone to make sure we could all make a walk. I had cuts a bruises everywhere but could still move, Tim complained about a headache, and Nick had a bruised wing. Chase was just fine with his speed and all. "lead the way." i said to my brother.

We crept through alleys and backyards until we reached the safe house, a small ordinary house a few blocks from the school. "Its nothing special but here it is." Nick said walking up to the house. We followed him inside and looked around. It looked like a normal little three bedroom house. we gathered in the living room and went to sit on the couch. "I wouldn't sit their if i were you." Nick said cautiously but Amber, as usual, ignored him. She sat down and suddenly the couch moved and grew. "uh-oh. here we go." Nick said. "Who dares to sit on the mighty ash dragon!" The couch howled. We all froze, all but Nick.
