*Lillys pov*

Can you get your friend to take you to the store to get a couple of things?-Michael

Sure but we have to take your car or moms van because his car is still at our old town.-lilly

Okay but tell him to be careful with the car.-Michael

I nod and go upstairs to get him. We agrees to take me and dad gives us the keys and the list.

As we drive through the country I notice a smallish figure sitting on the side of the road.

Stop the car.-lilly

What why?-jake

I see something.

I don't se anything lilly.

There is a person on the road.

It's probly a hitch hiker that a car broke down. They don't have their thumb out so we don't need to stop.

God damn it jake! It's a child so stop the car or I swear I will take a spoon and shove it in your ear!

He stops the car and I jump out. I see a child that looks like she isn't in school yet.

Hey why ate you alone out here?

She shrugs.

Where do you live?

Texas.

That's a long ways away. Why are you here?

My mommy said she didn't want me and my daddy died last year so she brought me here 5 days ago so I walked here and I don't know where she is.

I don't think she is coming back sweetheart.

Why?

I don't know. But I do know somewhere you can go.

With me.

She smiles widely and I smile back.

I'm lilly and that's jake, in the car.

She giggles.

She giggles again.

Okay. Let's get into the car.

I carry her on my hip to the car and buckle her into the back seat. I shut the door and climb into the front seat.

Jake holds my hand and Ansley giggles.

Where are we going?

To the store.

What's that?

It's where you buy food.

Okay.

When was the last time you at or drank anything?

Uhmm. I don't remember. My mommy didn't give my food often.

I text my dad what happened and tell him to make something for her to eat.

What do you like to eat?

I don't know. My mommy gave me the stuff left off of her plate.

We get to the store and I go in and get the stuff that my dad wanted me to get and I buy an outfit that looks like it would fit ansley.

When we get home all ansley does is stare at everything.

Wow.

Everything. Your house is so big!

Only you and jake live here?

No my parents and sister live here to.

What are their names?

Michael, Trinity, and Haven.

Those are nice names.

Your name is nice too. It's like a flower. I love lillys.

My dad walks and and Ansley starts talking to him. After a few mins he brings her into the kitchen and gives her some chicken nuggets and apple juice.

He calls up the police station to look up a record for her and they said both of her parents are dead. Her mother just died 3 days ago from too mutch heroin.

The police say they are sending someone to get her and they will send her to an orphanage.

At around 8 I bring a pillow and blanket down to the couch for her to sleep on.

So are you giving me away too?

What do you mean ansley?

I heard your daddy. He said someone was getting me tomorrow.

Oh. I don't know if the people will let us keep you.

Oh.

I try to hold back tears. I was adopted and it sucks being at the stupid shelter. They treat you like a wild dog and the people there are mean.

I will be back.

Where are you going?

To talk to my dad.

Okay.

I go up to my dad and tears sting at my eyes.

We can't give ansley to the shelter. Can't she stay here?

I don't know. We don't have enough room.

Well jake can sleep in my room and we can paint the walls. The adoption centers around here are horrible. Please dad we can't send her there.

Okay I will call the people.

He calls them and I hear him arguing for ten minutes straight. After he ends the call he tells me that the people are coming tomorrow.

Wait did you think they were coming to get her? No of course not! They are coming with the papers to adopt ansley!
