Chapter 1
The Auditions
I drum my fingers on the desk, my eyes flirting to and from the clock. Today has to be the most anticipated day of the whole year, second maybe to Christmas. I glance at a peer who flashes me his stop watch, claiming we have 58 seconds left. I groan inwardly. They say time flies when you’re having fun, but does time really have to drag on and ON whenever you just can’t stand the anticipation any longer.
“Fifteen” Ben mumbles next to me. I grin and begin to whisper-chant down the time. Eventually the rest of the class at my arts high school join me and as we get to 5, our voice level has risen so loudly the teacher stops his lecture and stares stupidly at us as if to say, “Where do you think math is going to get you in English class?” Then, just as we reach one, the clock blares to life and I literally throw my entire notebook in the air declaring, “SCREW SCHOOL!” I rush out the door and into the flood of students wrestling to get past each other, and eventually make it to the hall way and find my locker. I dig through my crap and find an old bag and start stuffing everything from books to old decomposed lunches in it. My best friend Julia elbows me and hands me an earbud. We stand there for a second, jamming to, the latest Ed Sheeran single, A-team.
“Ohmigawd Ry, I totally forgot to ask, did you land the audition???”
“YESS!!!! My slot is 4:30. The gal I talked to said they were so impressed with my resume, that it was a no brainer to give me an audition slot.”
“EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!” Saisha jumps on me, squealing in my ear
“WHOA GIRL!” I yell, pushing her off. “What happened to you? Land T-Swift tickets?? Because if you did I am SO breaking into your house and taking those.”
“No STUPID!” Saisha slaps me playfully on the shoulder, her (fake) glasses frames teetering on her nose. She glances around as if someone were eavesdropping on us. “Well… WES ASKED ME OUT!!!!!” She screams, jumping up and down, a huge grin spread across her face.
“Shut UP!” I say, speechless. Wes is our best-guy-friend and said he had a huge crush on the most popular girl in school, Tiffany.
“Riiiight!!!! So I was just at my locker and when I close it, he’s there wearing that sexy smirk like always and-” I close my locker and jump 3 feet.
“OHMIGAWD WES! You gave me a fricken heart-attack!!!” I slap him with my geometry book (which wasn’t very nice considering the fact that I’m in honors math).
“Well, I’m like Batman. You talk about the locker-smile and, Buhbam! It’s just there.” He says pulling on one of my amber curls.
“Well ANYWAY. Before we were so RUUUUUUDELY interrupted by the somewhat-happy-couple, Ryley landed an audition as a dancer for the X-Factor.” Saisha and Wes look at me speechless.
“No WAY! I bet that pays more than a job at Nando’s.” Saisha comments
“No kidding. I’m getting lodging, food, pay, AND I get to be on TV weekly.” I say smugly, then frown. “That is, if I make it.”
Julia rolls her eyes. “Gurl, you make Shakira look like a sumo wrestler.” I grin.
“But really, who needs the X-Factor when I have you three??” I pull them in and we all hug, much to Wes’s disgust.
“RAPE!!! RAAAAAAAPE!!!!” He screams.
“Ha-ha. I bet you would like it.” I smirk
“Maybe I would.” Wes pulls his lower lip through his teeth
