Chapter Twelve
Justin
Forcing his feet forward Justin climbed up the steps and onto his aunt's porch. With his mind in a daze he knocked on the door and waited for it to open. The face of his aunt appeared in front of him as she opened the front door.
"Justin!" A smile broke out onto her face, but it slowly slipped when she noticed the look of distraught on her nephew's. "Are you okay?"
He gave a swift shake of the head. "No." His breathing was shaky as his throat clogged with tears. "I'm not okay." Before he could stop himself he told his aunt Carla everything; about himself, about Sam, his parents, and just how long he has been hiding the truth.
Her face rarely changed from one of sadness and concern as he told her his story. Justin knew that she wouldn't hold this information against him. Carla had always treated him like another son. Long before she married Darrell's father and inherited Darrell as a step-son Justin was all she had. Due to his parents always working, whenever he wasn't at school he would usually be at the house Carla was renting at the time. She loved her nephew and treated him like her own son. Carla was actually more of a mother to him then his own was most of the time. That may be why he decided to tell her everything. He just hoped she wouldn't abandon him like his parents did. He couldn't take it if that happened. Darrell would be the only family he had.
Justin was sitting on her porch steps with her next to him by the time he finished speaking. She didn't say anything at first. Her arms rested on her knees and her hands were folded together against her lips as if she were praying. For a scary moment he feared that she would jump up and yell at him to get off her property. But she didn't. She stayed silent so he waited patiently for her to make a move.
Finally she lowered her hands against her knees and turned to him. "You know Justin I have always envied your bravery. You've never been scared to stand up for yourself or your friends. You're not afraid to take risks. Even as a child you were doing things that amazed me. Today, I am so proud of you. You have been fighting hard to become who you truly are and I could not be prouder of you for that.
"If only my parents could see that," he wished helplessly.
Carla hesitated for a brief moment. "Justin, your father has his reasons for reacting the way he did. Now I'm not saying they were a good reaction or was it the right way to handle it, but he has his reasons. Those reasons go back a long time, and I wish I could tell you."
"Why can't you?" He asked.
"The same reason why Darrell didn't tell me about everything you were going through. It's your story, and that is his story. Maybe someday a day will come when you will hear the truth, but if that day doesn't come then maybe you will be able to convince me to tell you." She sent him a small smile.
"I'm scared," he admitted to her. "I've been hiding this part of me for so long. I don't know how to let myself be me again."
"Then what you have to do is find yourself again. Take a break from the stress. Allow yourself to have some fun and be free if only for a moment. Now here's what you are going to do. Tomorrow is Saturday and next week is Spring break so I suggest you take off early. I know for a fact that you don't work so you will leave tonight and just drive. Take the time to discover who you are and what it is you want," she suggested.
