Maya brushes her long brown, with red highlights and cringes. She remembers the day her mom had died. It wasn't long ago but it still hunted her and her sister.
The man was aiming for Maya, the gun shot, but instead of Maya's blood flying through the air it was her mothers. Her thick, odd blood that everyone has now, staining her hair the light red colour on top of her already brown with golden highlighted hair. Her mother had fallen into her arms and Maya held her as people kept hustling her inside without a care.
She shivers the memories away, putting her hairbrush back on her bedside table.

A few minutes later she hears a small knock on her door.
"Come in." Maya calls, knowing its Jade, probably wondering about before. The screaming, the running, the door slamming in a kid only 3 years older then her.
Maya didn't want to tell her about that, the fact that if she were that kid she would be willingly putting herself into harms way, willingly ending her life.
As Jade walks in Maya pats the bed beside her so she would sit. She does.
"What was with all the screaming earlier?" She asks her, in her sweet and innocent voice.
Maya loved Jade so much. Everything about her she loved, her long, straight blonde hair that went down to her waist. Her bright, emerald green eyes that always shine with happiness. She always wanted to help everyone, but will stay out of your way if you tell her to. She looked up to Maya, and Maya had just let a mother slam a door in a 14 year old boys face, right after he was told he needed to fight to the death to be accepted back into his family.
She shook off the horrible feeling.
"It was nothing, just a dream." Maya tells her, ruffling her silky hair slightly, hoping she'll get off the subject.
She did, but only slightly. "Did you hear? Something happened. I think it was to the heroes. Did something happen to them?" She asks Maya, curiously, another thing Maya liked about her was her curiosity and her love for trying new things and exploring them.
Maya nods and so does Jade, but only slightly, as if too big of a nod would wreck the moment.
The room fills with silence, the slight noises from outside echoing off the walls.
Maya glances out the window at the scorching sun. She was used to it by now, the sun, the never ending heat. Jade was also starting to get used to it, though she always had a harder time. She loved the water not the dry.
"How about I make us some breakfast?" Maya asks Jade, looking back at her, remembering she was still beside her.
Jade nods, and smiles slightly, her adorable little smile.
Maya stands up and starts to head to the kitchen. When the two get to the kitchen they see their dad, Aiden. Maya walks over to him and kisses his cheek.
"Hello, father." Maya says and squeezes by him and out the kitchen door to the animal pens. Maya returns with two fresh eggs, one for Jade and one for herself.
She takes out an old pan and puts some mostly melted butter in it and places it in there heating oven, a metal sheet that is directly in the sun and has a small fire kept underneath.
Jade, Maya and Aiden talk while the eggs cook. They talk about Aiden's work at the butchers shop, and their grades at their three hour school. It teaches them how to survive in these harsh conditions.
When the eggs are nicely cooked, Maya flips them onto the slightly chipped plates and passes one to Jade, keeping the more burnt one for herself.
Jade takes some of the veggies from a small, wooden bowl on the table and adds them. Maya adds a few too.
"Did you two hear about what happened to the heroes?" Aiden asks them.
Maya nods, sighing, frustrated by that topic of conversation because she didn't want to talk about nor remember this morning.
Jade nods as well, looking at Maya, wondering what was wrong with talking about the heroes.
"I've also heard that Mrs. Dissie sent out poor little Bredon." Aiden sighs sadly. "Poor guy, he's only fourteen."
Maya can hear Jade gasp softly beside her, and sighs again, really wishing she didn't have to hear that.
