The cold, biting air entered my nostrils and filled my lungs with a sting of chill, my throat clenching as I exhaled the icy breath I held in, forming heavy clouds of smoke as I struggled to keep my eyes wide open through the biting winds.

The snow falling onto my clothes clung onto the threads of my jacket as they slowly seeped through the material, devouring the last feeling of warmth I had and replacing it with a frigid touch.

Shuddering I pushed my way to the empty ballroom through the glass doors of the hotel, the warm, vibrant glow illuminating the darkness that the cold outside had put upon me.

I stepped onto the rich velvet carpets, their red hue darkening to resemble blood from the snow dampening the surface.

I took in the details of the room; the grand chandelier that hung above on the high ceiling, the red velvet carpets and sofas, all lined with gold, a large glass menagerie sitting proudly on the far corner of the area.

I stood until I heard someone clear their throat and I turned my attention to an older woman, a pair of prescription glasses perched on her thin nose.

"You going to stand there or what?" she spat as I took in her comment with shock.

"I'm sorry, I'm looking for a room to stay in?"

She then turned around to rummage in a drawer and retrieve a key, sliding it towards me on the marble counter before resting her hands on her hips.

"That'll be four hundred mister."

I retrieved my wallet from the pocket of my jacket before adding up several bills to form an overall of four hundred, which left me with barely enough money for proper food.

"Thank you mister..."

"Howell, Dan... Howell."

"Okay Mister Howell, gotta warn you about something before you go."

I hummed in response to show that I was listening and she leaned in slowly before craning her neck to reach my ear.

"Don't you go messin' around in Room 46, it's one hell of a ride once you enter and there's no going back. No exaggeration on 'hell' sonny."

She then proceeded to return to her position and walk towards a door towards the back of the counter.

She turned around before giving me a glare with the squint of her eyes, "Mark my words sonny, don't want you gettin' in trouble."

And with the slam of the door, she was gone.
