Penny's point of view:
When I got out of the hospital a day later, my wing was in a cast and I was confined to walk everywhere I went.
It was an overcast morning, and light rain trickled down the leaves of the trees. The perfect weather to describe my mood. Suddenly, I heard a twig snap directly above me.
I looked up to see a peculiar sight. The boy who rescued me yesterday, Talon was his name I think, was sitting on a branch above me with his legs dangling in the air. "Good morning, Penny!" He cheered with a mischievous grin.
"Good morning!" I replied awkwardly, not knowing what to say. He jumped down and landed in front of me. "Where are you headed?" He asked, seeing my discomfort. "I'm going home. My uncle's probably worried sick." I replied and resumed my walking.
"I'll walk with you." He got into my pace.
"That's unneccesary, but thank you."
"Oh, I insist. Just in case you collapse like last time."
"Well, alright. But keep up."
"Yes ma'am."
I chuckled at his weirdness. He was still wearing the same hat as the day before, and my curiosity got the best of me.
"Can I ask you a question?" I asked, and he nodded in reply.
"What are you?"
"... I'm afraid I don't understand."
"I mean, what kind of creature are you? I'm having trouble figuring out what you are, with your purple eyes and sharp features and everything."
"Oh! Well, I'll show you." He said and stopped to face me. He slowly took off his hat, and beneath it was a head of wild, messy, jet black hair. He had two long, pointy ears sticking out the sides of his head.
"You're an elf!" I said aloud. The pixies weren't in very good terms with the elves, because they tended to be very mischievous.
We were supposed to act as if they were an enemy, but how could I do that, when the first thing this elf did to me was save my life?
Talon ducked his head in embarrassment, and his cheeks became a crimson red. "Yeah. I understand if you don't want to be my friend anymore." The words left his lips easily, as if he was used to saying them. As if I wouldn't be the first pixie he had tried to be friends with and got rejected because of what he was.
A feeling of sadness came rolling through me, and I looked at this selfless boy with pity. I put my finger under his chin, and tilted his head so his eyes met mine.
"Why would you say something like that?" I asked softly. He seemed surprised at my question. "Because I'm an elf and you're a pixie. We're not supposed to be friends." He answered, more to himself.
"Look. All I know about you is that you could have left me to die yesterday, yet you didn't. You had every right and every reason to let me bleed to death, yet you still saved me. Elf or not, you have my eternal respect and a well deserved friendship."
A flicker of hope shone in his eyes, and a smile grew on his lips. "Now come on. We have to go." I said and started walking.
We talked about a lot of things on the way home. When we reached my front door, Talon and I said goodbye as friends. I entered my home and saw my uncle sleeping on his hooves with a book in his hand.
I held back a giggle when he snored. I suddenly felt very tired and weary, and I realised that it must have been from all that walking. Pixies aren't supposed to walk much, but unfortunately my wings were useless at the time.
I climbed into bed and was sucked into a dream of elves and raindrops.
