"You didn't have to punch him" an angry Lila fretted, dabbing some kind of ointment over the cut I had gotten last night in the bar brawl."Of course I did, he punched back" I defended myself, sitting in one of the plush chairs that our measly little inn offered in our room.
"But you didn't stop punching him ma'am" Lila huffed, tossing away the cotton she was using to dab on my face. I shooed her away, rolling my eyes while also wincing in pain at the cut above my eyebrow. It has been roughly a week of us being here and so far I have found more trouble then I would have liked. People were more stubborn the I would like, even when drowning in booze they prove to be a problem. Me and Lila were stationed in some drab inn that was always loud and never seemed to quiet down. Not to mention the food was horrible.
"You should have seen the other blocks faces then!" hiccuped Toni in a fit of giggles, our newest...ally. Lila's connection who I am not so sure I feel very...secure with. We met in this very inn, and Toni was drunk in the corner wearing clothes that did not even belong to her. Her hair was choppy as if she had tried cutting it herself but got bored halfway through so she decided to stop at this awkward stage. But...despite her look, the girl could hold her own...and could definitely toss a decent right hook.
"But now you're going to be looked down on...as the lady from London who starts bar fights!" Lila stated, placing the cotton and ointment in a small tin.
"Oh, Lila everything will be fine! I will not be here long anyway, what does it matter if I gather a rather...extensive reputation?"
"What about Arthur?" She said, raising an eyebrow at me.
"Oh, he will hear nothing of it! I will tell him what I always tell him" I begin, "I simply lost my footing and my head made contact with a rather sharp rock! Simple" I said while Lila frowned in response clearly not liking it.
"You seem to be doing that a lot lately..." she added, casting her eyes down to gathering any loose gauze to stuff it back into the little tin.
"Yeah, you're awfully good at lying ya know. It's really impressive actually" Toni noted, squinting slightly as if trying to make sense as to why it...made sense.
I pressed my lips together, trying not to get defensive about it. So I...lied more then I should. Even to my husband. They don't understand I thought bitterly to myself, having to stop myself from saying that out loud. I had to remind myself that what I was doing was for the betterment of everyone here. I didn't need to explain anything unless I felt the need to. Especially to Arthur, he just..wouldn't understand. Don't get me wrong I love Arthur with every fiber of my being, together for nearly 5 years going on 6 and our love never wavered. But...each year brought a new layer of fear and frantic need to protect him. So if I have to lie through my teeth with a smile on my face to protect the one person who I love above myself then I will. It'll make sense in time...It has to...
"Have you gathered anything new Toni?" I cleared my throat aiming to change the subject off of my questionable actions.
"Uh? Oh! Well..." She sat up at this, moving forward and lowering her voice as if someone was listening right outside our closed door. "I asked around some of the other pubs and inns for these fellows you're looking for and well...only one place has told me about a group of men that meet up on the second floor"
I raise my eyebrows, Lila slowing down tiding up the medical supplies in order to listen in, glancing between Toni and me. "Oh? Anything about specific meeting times? Anywhere they're going to as of recent?" I press with a spark of excitement shifting in my chest at the thought of finally getting somewhere. Despite being here for a week I have had little luck in finding a lead to my goal. Nothing but bread crumbs and since I was an outsider it was essential that Toni help me gather information from some of the locals here.
