A ray of sun shone down on the shivering pup. It was a welcoming warmth. Iris stretched as she stood up. Her body was stiff from sleeping in her temporary shelter. Her thick fur was slowly drying.
Iris padded out of the alley way, cautious of her surroundings. The city seemed dead. No one was ever out at this hour and it was nice to have some peace.
Iris's stomach let out a low grumble. She hasn't had a decent meal since she had left what she had once called home. A few crumbs here and there have managed to keep the starving pup alive.

"You poor thing, come here girl" Iris turned to see where the voice was coming from. A small human was holding out a piece of bread to her.
She sniffed towards the food, wanting it badly, but not sure if she could trust this creature.
Iris crept forward. When she reached a point where the human could not reach her yet she could reach the food, she took it between her teeth gently. The human let out a sigh. He was dressed in ragged clothing unlike all of the other humans in this city. He was just as hungry as she was, but gave his food to her. She let out a small whine of graditude, then backed up a little bit before taking a bite of the bread. It was delicious. She took another bite and continued to do so until there was a small piece left.
Iris crept forward again with the small piece of bread dangling from her jaws, but this time she was close enough for the human to touch her.
He held out a hand to her, letting her sniff him before she proceeded forward. He gently pet her when he knew she was okay with this. Iris dropped the piece of bread in his lap. "No, girl, this is yours. You need it more than I do."
Iris whined.
The human tried offering it to her again, but this time she refused. The human let out another sigh. He brought the food to his mouth and began to eat it. Once the human had finished what was left of the bread she crawled onto his lap. She wanted some comfort and could tell the human needed the same. The human laid an arm on top of her, careful not to trap her and with the other hand scratched her ear.
"You're something special." He whispered. Iris laid her head on his leg and closed her eyes.
She enjoyed the love that this human was projecting even if it was only for a short while.
