Chapter 2

Ughhhhhhh. Rrrrgguuuhhhh

“What the hell”, I mumbled.

I didn’t even try waking up and just turned to my side instead.

Not a good idea.

You know those times when you sometimes wake up in cold sweat because you get the horrifying feeling of falling.

Ya, well that was technically me but I was actually falling and instead of waking up in cold sweat I had the beautiful faces of monsters reaching for my flailing body instead.

“Shit!” I yelled into the early morning air.

RUUUUAAAHHH. UGHHHHAAAA

That my friends was the sound of a pack of animals becoming aware their meal was close to their reach.

I thanked God when I realized I was smart enough to lace myself with my backpack, which still clung to the tree. Barely.

Still trying to keep my eyes open in the glaring sunrise, I swung my feet up trying to catch a stray branch.

I missed.

Fuck.

This time I let myself get more momentum even though I knew it would add more strain to my poor backpack.

In the grove of the sway I swung my legs onto one of the main branches of the tree (I may have hit a zombie head or two in the motion) and took a breath of relief.

The rest was cake. Kind of.

I managed to get my arms around the trunk and pulled myself over on top of the branch. I looked down to see the creatures starting to claw at the tree.

That was way to close.

Sadly these encounters often occurred to me so I had learned to take extra precaution for my clumsy self, hence the backpack idea.

I sat on the branch, careful to leave my legs from the outstretched arms of about ten monsters. I rubbed my eyes to take away the sleep and started on my plan of escape. I decided I needed a better view so I took the liberty of climbing to the top of the tree.

As I went up I could already feel the heat gathering together getting ready for the day. I hit a couple branches on the way up but I finally made it to a clearing of leaves. I poked my head out and inspected every escape route I could take. Around me was an orchard of trees and much farther away I could see a distant clearing. I turned back the direction I had first ran from and could somewhat make out the horrible town. I instantly chose not to go that way considering I already had a bad taste for cities in my mouth. I then double-checked for alternate escapes but alas with my luck it was one way or the highway.
