Still clueless about... everything, I sat in the corner with Laura's head on my lap. She was asleep and I felt a sense of relief.
It seemed to have been hours before the sniffs and snuffs died down, and hours more till the lights were turned on.
It took several minutes for my eyes to adjust to the blinding white walls and bright light.
I looked around for another inspection, finally being able to see. There were about 40 or so people in the room. About as many girls as boys. Almost everyone looked to be within a two-year age gap. Everyone looked different, but identical at the same time. We all wore white, a loose draping dress for the girls and a top and loose pants for the boys, with spots of coloured garments and accessories indicating clues of our passed lives. After examining everyone before me, I looked to Laura who had peaceful expression on her face as she slept. She, too wore white, but also had on rainbow-coloured knee length socks. She had golden-brown waist length hair messily sprawled around, and her face was slightly puffy due to her crying. Then I noticed something. Everyone, and I mean every one had dark hair! Not a single head of hair any other colour than brown or black!
I finally began to examine myself. I couldn't see my face, but the rest of my body seemed to be kind of the same as the others'. I was thin. I felt my hair that was pulled up into a bun. Dark, I presumed. Then I heard a little jingling. I looked to my wrist and saw a 2 beautiful bracelets. One was a golden charm bracelet. It had only 3 charms, a star on the left, one half of a heart in the centre, and another star on the right. On the back was a small engraving. Don't do anything stupid...without me. ~S It said. The other was silver and had a pair of handcuffs on it. That one had an engraving, too. it said Partners in crime ~S and I instantly felt my heart melt, but I didn't know why. Those bracelets meant a lot to me before. I could feel it. 'S' must have been someone really close to me. A friend, relative perhaps.
All of a sudden, two enormous doors in front of me that I hadn't noticed as yet flung open. A lady walked in. She wore blue formals and her brown hair in a tight bun. Her face was blanketed with wrinkles that let out her age. Two men with guns followed her in. The doors remained open, and the men stepped to the side. Laura sat up, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
"Hello, children." she spoke with authority, "I am Avril Lancaster. I am the head of the Ship. I'm sure you all must be wondering what you are doing here, why you can't remember anything, and other such... silly, silly questions." Some people shook their heads. The others sat still. "Well, you will learn everything soon. Right now, We will work on giving you some memory of yourselves. Everyone here is between the ages of seven," she glanced cunningly at Laura, "to seventeen." And she looked at a boy on the other side of the room. "Shall we begin?" Saying that, she produced a stack of folders from behind her back. "As I call your names, please come up and take your respective folders." She said, and began calling out names alphabetically. "Laura Vanderwall?" She called and Laura got up and scurried toward... Ms.Lancaster, as she asked to call her. As she handed the folder to Laura, she flashed her a smug smile and ruffled her hair. The other kids had already begun reading their folders with intense concentration. Some were smiling, pleased. Others were expressionless. Laura, on the other hand didn't read.
She tugged at my shirt. I looked at her beautiful blue eyes filled with fear. "Help." She said. I took the file from her hands and began reading.
"Laura Vanderwall," I read, "Age Seven. Date of birth, September fifteenth, 2009 A.D." which meant that it was year 2016 at the time. "Parents," I stopped. I decided to skip over that part. I didn't know how she would react. "Role, soldier. Key, 7763S."
Under that was a picture of Laura. Her hair neatly combed... Wait... In the picture, her hair was blond! I looked back at her to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Yep! Definitely brown. I chose to ignore that fact. She wore a pink spaghetti- strap dress and a wide smile.
I looked to see Laura with a soft smile, looking at the picture.
"Nova Rubin." I hopped up and grabbed my folder. Before Ms.Lancaster handed it to me, though, she gave me a look. A stern look that made my heart skip a beat. Her face then fell in to a smile. As much as she tried to make it look sweet, i could practically taste the suspicion she had about me.
I walked back to Laura who was looking at me keenly. I sat and began to read my folder.
Name: Nova Rubin
Age: 13
Date of Birth: October first, 2002 A.D.
I was almost twice Laura's age!
Parents: Joan and Richard Rubin
Role: Soldier in Command
Under the information, I saw a picture of a girl staring back at me. This girl had on a simple blue tee and blue denims. Her hair was a beautiful shade of red flowing free with only a simple blue ribbon holding half the hair in a ponytail. This girl had a fair, but not pale complexion and light brown, hazel coloured eyes.
This girl was me.
I was... beautiful! And my favourite colour was probably blue.
Below the picture was number. a code, probably.
7711SIC
What was that?
About half an hour later, Ms.Lancaster spoke again.
"Now, if you are all done reading about yourselves, we will move on to the next phase of initiation." She said and exited. A few more men with guns entered the room and escorted/ushered us out.
One thing kept looping in the empty abyss of my mind: initiation for what?
